State police and other government agencies face scrutiny as investigators disclose widespread lie detector testing. Police hauled off more than 50 participants during the encounter.
Alabama Governor George C. Wallace declares the Wisconsin presidential primary a victory as he nears 20 percent of the vote while Governor John W. Reynolds leads in the race for a Democratic nomination and Rep. John W. Byrnes is the Republican favorite son candidate. With 2,474 of 3,552 precincts reporting Reynolds tops Wallace and Byrnes lags, Wallace vows if he reaches 200,000 votes that would be victory.
Crowds of New Yorkers waited hours to view General of the Army Douglas MacArthur’s body in the 7th Regiment Armory. A simple steel casket, prayers, and eulogies marked the moving vigil before its transport to Washington for a 3 10 p.m. ceremony.
AP reports the White House offered no comment on stories of Lyndon Johnson and his wife driving the LBJ ranch Easter weekend. Journalists described Mrs Johnson sipping beer from a paper cup while narrating ranch scenes as the President allegedly reached high speeds in Texas, prompting questions after Time and Newsweek coverage.
Houston on a windy Saturday Scott Carpenter a NASA astronaut acted fast when a boy’s kite string snagged a rake in power lines causing a short circuit. Carpenter used an ax to free the wires while neighbor Gerald Christiansen held them away from a pole. No injuries but three homes needed minor repairs.
Panhandle voters set records in several towns with White Deer reporting 195 write in votes for Alvin Williams and a turnout of 372, 275 above last year. Hereford posted 883 ballots, Spearman and Shamrock also reported gains while Channing postponed due to supplies with polls rescheduled for April 30.
Alin Williams, not listed on the ballot, wins the White Deer mayoral race with 195 write in votes. Aldermen elected are Bill E. Abbott and Joel Sewell. Corporation court reporter chosen is Josephine Milikien. Other vote tallies include Burl Caudle 76 and Robert C. Easthorn 65 for mayor, and Jacque Barnes 58 and Joseph E. Wheelr 56 for reporter.
Debate opened in the House over President Johnsons proposal to issue food stamps for families on relief or with low income. Democrats defend cost and diet improvement while Republicans question reach and impact, with lawmakers Harold Cooley Leonor Sullivan and Martha Griffiths steering the bill.
With about 90 percent counted, Kansas City appears to affirm by a narrow margin an ordinance expanding the public accommodations law to taverns and amusements. Outcome still in doubt as counts continue.
Vaughn won a third mayoral term with 309 votes while Clarence Pettitt and Otto Holland trailed. Aldermen named were Richard Holton with 409 votes and E. J. Copeland with 380. Lackey led alderman ballots with 117. A total of 472 ballots were cast, a city record.
Joe Rone was re elected mayor Tuesday with a record vote total of 229. He received 162 votes while opponent Kerem Burgess spoiled 65 ballots. Commissioners elected were Wayne Brown with 162 votes and Marvin Pollett with 163 votes. Other candidates Calvin Jordans polled 38 votes and A. A Pinkerton received 19 votes.
Seibert Worley was elected mayor Tuesday in a record turnout election of 648 votes. He received 313 votes, defeating George Barth with 223 and E. E. Hoff.
