City officials announce electric traffic signals amid plans for a million dollar super power plant in the Panhandle Plains. A Winsome Russian singer thrills the crowd as a $50,000 fund backs a project first step toward converting the Panhtian Dle area into farm related aims.
Chief engineer Berg and investor Ross unveiled plans for a 1 million dollar super power plant near Amarillo to electrify the plains, boost farming, and attract eastern capital. A $50 000 advertising fund was pledged, with $25 000 more expected within five days as local supporters form a committee to finance the project.
Giovanni Amendola, 45, chief of the opposition to the Fascist government in Italy, has died in Cannes France. He previously served as Italy’s war minister in 1922 and later as minister of the colonies.
Journalists from 21 American republics gathered for their first congress. Newspaper broadcasters urged radio legislation. Senate debated the Iowa senatorial election case. President Coolidge nominated Brigadier General Edgar Jadwin as chief of army engineers. District Attorney Buckner described New York conditions to the prohibition committee. McCarl said only Congress can extend war risk insurance conversion time. Senator Walsh announced a resolution for a Senate inquiry into large mergers.

Washington April 7 Brig Gen Edgar Jadwin assistant chief of engineers will be promoted to chief of engineers with major general rank June 27 upon Maj Gen Harry Taylor’s retirement. Reappointments include Davis as adjutant general Walker as chief of finance Williams as chief of ordnance Ireland as surgeon general Barrett to brigadier general May 14 Deakyne to assistant chief of engineers and Rethers to brigadier general and assistant quartermaster on Bellinger’s retirement.
City officials and police searched for Commissioner Harris during a city commission meeting. Harris later said he attended a different meeting and was unaware of a 7 20 p m start. He arrived home at 10 15 p m and explained the miscommunication to The News.
A violent attempt to harm Mussolini was thwarted when an officer dragged a woman to safety, averting a fatal confrontation. The incident interrupted Mussolini’s public appearance and drew police action as authorities secured the area.
Benito Mussolini survived a near fatal shooting after a woman fired at him as he saluted crowds after a congress of surgeons. The assailant Violet Gibson was seized by Carabinieri while Mussolini received aid from Dr. Raffaele Bastianelli and Prof. Roberto Alessandri and returned to Rome with a minor facial wound.
Houston Cotton Exchange president John K Doerrance presents season totals for August 4 1925 to March 31 1928 with gross receipts at 4 659 287 bales and net receipts at 501 794 bales. He notes a large stock of 140 000 bales above prior years in Houston.
A. D. Payne announces candidacy for Texas House of Representatives from the 128th district. He serves as Canyon school superintendent and will move to Amarillo with his family after school closes. He touts an educator’s record, West Texas roots, and a pledge to run a clean campaign on constructive policies.
The Amarillo city commission approves replacing the old traffic buttons with an electric signal system. Mayor Bivins declares Amarillo has outgrown the buttons and directs the city manager to install the new signals downtown, with details on exact locations and number to follow.
C N Whitehead named president of the Missouri Kansas Texas railway of Texas at the Dallas directors meeting. He succeeds C I Schaff whose retirement becomes effective May 1. A police report says a band of fanatical university students was mobilizing last week for an armed sally into Czecho-Slovakia. Six leaders were arrested amid the thwarted plot. An unofficial version mentions a former archduke involved.
The state Democratic executive committee will not meet until its regular June session and cannot act on bolters. Chairman Arthur Fidson said rumors of ousting bolters who voted Republican in 1924 were dismissed by Chairman Eldson.
H. L. Mencken editor of the American Mercury was acquitted in municipal court on a charge of possessing and selling obscene literature. He was arrested after selling a copy of the April issue on a Boston street.
A 400 man strike force battles a blaze at the Union Oil tank farm near San Luis Obispo California. Four to five reservoirs with roughly 8 million barrels at risk ignite after a lightning strike. Losses exceed 10 million dollars as crews shield 60 surface tanks and halt further spread.
Franklin Rose, missing air mail aviator, is safe and uninjured after crashing 65 miles south of Jordan Valley on Juniper Mountain during a storm. He landed in a grain field, rode 80 miles to Hardesty ranch, and plans to take off for Boise early Thursday morning with ample fuel.
Santa Rosa California April 7 Luther Burbank is in a grave condition after a gastro intestinal disorder exhausted his nervous system Three physicians Gallwey Shiels and Dr Joseph Shaw issued a bulletin saying the patient will remain quiet and continue the same treatment He was disturbed by prolonged nervous restlessness and poor nourishment.
Two bandits robbed a Liberty State Bank branch in San Francisco's Mission district and fled with about $2,000 after a running gun battle with police in which Patrolman George O'Leary was shot in the arm. A nearby house was searched but no suspect found. earlier the same day another bank, Anglo California Trust Company, reported a separate $500 robbery nearby.
Western low pressure moves southeast to Louisiana bringing rain from southern Texas to the Lake region and Pennsylvania. A second disturbance offshore along the California coast may bring rain to the west. temperatures drop with frost in parts.
