Senator Tydings announced FBI records clear Owen Lattimore, Johns Hopkins professor, of Communist spy charges after a committee review. Four members backed the finding. Senator Hicklenlooper would view records next week while McCarthy accused Tydings of deception. Lattimore denounced McCarthy to the panel as a liar and tool of fanatics.
President Truman urged Congress to raise unemployment benefits to up to $30 weekly on a uniform national scale, extend eligibility to 26 weeks, and cover six million more workers not currently served. He cited 4.5 million jobless in early 1950 as urgent, noting the plan would require higher taxes but moderate overall costs. House Democrats moved quick to back the plan.
Gunfire ends Charles Binaggio and his ally Charles Gargotta in Kansas City Missouri. Binaggio found dead with four head shots at the First District Democratic Club on Truman Road. Gargotta shot nearby on Representative Short. Rep Macy calls for a congressional inquiry into crime gang ties to politics. Short says Binaggio was killed for impeding the Missouri Democratic senatorial primary.
John Kapral 84 died 9:40 PM at St. Anthony's Hospital after illness. An Austria native born May 10 1865 near Kaiserdorf he moved to the United States at 21 and worked as a tanner and railroad section hand before joining oil drilling in the Panhandle region. He lived with daughter Mrs. Howard Apel of Panhandle.
Harold Mohr, 36, ex-GI, stands trial for the slaying of his blind, cancer-wrecked brother Walter, 55. The jury of eight men and four women received the case after the judge outlined options of voluntary manslaughter, second degree murder, or first degree murder with no death penalty sought. Defense argued temporary insanity but psychiatrists testified Mohr is now safe to return to society.
