OPA orders a rise in western pine lumber ceilings to about 4.60 per 1000 board feet to spur housing programs. Wheat export deficits prompt White House talks as Anderson and Wallace cite a 2,687,000 ton January-March tally against a 3,000,000 ton goal.
The Security Council’s delay tactic by Russia over Iran exposed aims of all sides. Russia gains oil access with the United States and Great Britain. Iran obtains two pledges to withdraw Red Army by May, one to the council and one in the bilateral accord. The council showed small nations they have equal voice. The U S and Britain await Russia replies to notes on the subject.
Voters are urged to stamp approval on the Amarillo Independent School District program today with no opposing names on the ballot. Superintendent Chas M. Rogers called for a heavy vote to support school directors Gunn Briscoe and others facing reelection as expansion and teacher supply remain priorities.
District 3 Highland Park Homer Bartram seeks re election while District 6 Brady Luther Glovier runs. District 4 Bushland T G Baldwin is candidate. River Road trustees race features C N Brown and Dr G L Cline versus Mrs J N Childers and Mrs W H Pondet. Polls open 8 AM close 7 PM with precinct boundaries defined for Amarillo ISD.
Washington April 5 The PA report says Rep Harness lead measure would extend the draft to Feb 15 1947 but practically stop new inductions while keeping registration for 18 year olds. Committee postponed vote to next Tuesday with bipartisan backing and calls to discharge current enlistees after 18 months.
In Tokyo on April 5, attorney Jack Fihelly, aiding prosecutor Joseph Keenan against Japanese war criminals, recalls a session with former Premier Tojo. Fihelly described workmen interrupting, his shouted hubba hubba meaning hurry up, and Tojo’s remark that hubba hubba reminded him of Remember Pearl Harbor.
Albuquerque April 5 Republicans move to draft Maj. Gen. Patrick J. Hurley of Santa Fe for the U S Senate seat. Hurley's name is the focal point of the party effort as they aim to nominate a strong candidate in the race.
The House Banking Committee approved an amendment extending OPA for a year despite estimates it would raise consumer costs by over 500 million dollars annually. The measure would restrict price absorption on autos and appliances, with critics calling it consumer harm. The vote was 15 to 4 in favor, and a nine month limit on life span was rejected. Some senators plan parity revisions later.
An eight passenger and three crew two engine Navy transport plane crashed and exploded in the Isleta Indian reservation sandhills near Albuquerque killing all 11 aboard. The aircraft, based at Olathe Naval Air Station, disappeared after radio contact with Kirtland Field. Names withheld pending kin notices.
