After three new board members were sworn in, Amarillo Independent School District trustees elected H. O. Willborn as president and Ben H. Stone as vice president. Retiring president Lane McAfee and Sim Kelly and Gus Roberts relinquished seats as the three newcomers Mildred Wingate R. C. Neely Jr. and Gene Edwards joined for three year terms.

Convict Kills Prison Official In Escape Attempt
In Raiford Florida on April 4 a crime hardened robber and suspect murderer George A. Heroux from the FBI ten most wanted list shot three prison staff during an escape attempt. Assistant superintendent J G Godwin died from two gunshots. Guards L D Dodds and L L Wainwright were wounded. Godwin and Dodds had long prison service, while Wainwright was newer. Heroux, serving multiple sentences totaling fifty years, had pleaded guilty to armed robbery.

Senate Committee approves Stark amendment on Canadian River dam
The Senate Committee on Water Rights, Irrigation and Drainage endorsed a Hazlewood sponsored amendment to align state and federal law on the Canadian River dam. Eight directors of the Canadian River Water Authority backed the measure alongside city representatives. three senators opposed. The measure moves to the House Water Committee after the next session.

The City Planning and Zoning Commission recommends approval of a multi million dollar shopping center on Plains Boulevard occupying 58 acres of the Sunset Golf Course site with parking for 3000 and 442000 square feet of stores including two department stores and various shops. A second center at Wolflin and Georgia is to be advertised for public hearing. Other actions include rezoning changes and several rejections of proposed stores and retail zones.

Man Killed by Train Near Ady Belongs to Fort Worth & Denver Railway
Robert Marshall Bell Jr., a 29 year old Fort Worth & Denver Railway section worker, was killed when a motorcar he rested on during lunch was struck by a southbound train near Ady at about 12 40 p m. The motorcar had been set off the main line and was blown onto the tracks by a wind gust. Bell lived in Hobbs New Mexico and is survived by his mother and several siblings. Funeral arrangements are pending at Blackburn Shaw Funeral Home.
