Mrs. R M C of Plainview writes that on March 31 she saw a small round fast moving object in a clear sky. It whirled out of sight quickly and moved about the yard oddly as if seeking someone to show it to. The letter follows earlier UFO notes and reader correspondence.
Harry Bridges, president of the CIO Longshoremen and Warehousemen's Union, is convicted in federal court of perjury for swearing he was not a Communist. Co-defendants Henry Schmidt and J. R. Robertson face the same penalties. Judge Harris also jailed two defense lawyers for contempt, Vincent Hallinan and James MacInnis. Bridges and attorneys plan appeals as bond set at $5,000 and a new trial hearing is scheduled.
The White House dismissed reports of flying saucers as secret weapons. Press Secretary Charles G. Ross stated the President and staff have no knowledge of such objects and questioned the likelihood of a secret weapon project existing without the President’s awareness. The briefing touched on secrecy and public curiosity as the president traveled with his family.
Two Amarillo Gas Company employees Jack Grimes and Claude Bittick watched a flat circular object in the western sky while observing a model plane. The sighting occurred in the 600 block on South Roberts as the sun glinted off the object and it vanished toward the west.

A Senate subcommittee asked Senator McCarthy for documentary evidence in the State Department inquiry. The day ended two hours early as the Senate ran out of topics. Vinson warned Russians are expanding their war plane fleet in preparation for an atomic Pearl Harbor.
Fire destroyed 25 sections of grassland five miles south of Lefors along Farm Highway 291. Pampa and McLean fire departments aided volunteer crews for about six hours beginning around noon. The blaze threatened houses near the Mee Lean highway, burned on several ranches, with cattle losses and damage not fully tallied. Bulldozers aided firefighting efforts.
A survey to determine the cost of changing Amarillo's traffic signal system from overhead signals to corner signals is under way. Mayor Gene Klein told the city commission the study will assess the number of signals and posts needed and the cable work required for the Polk Taylor and Tyler downtown area conversion.
