Martial music filled Butler Field as twenty five bands from small and junior high schools entered the Texas Region One music festival finals. Drum majorettes drew attention in varied outfits from long woolen pants to satin skirts with tall shake headgear. Plumes on many hats cost three dollars each with ratings to be announced for classes E 1 D 1 and 2 C featuring Morse McLean Friona Stratford Lockney Spring Lake and others.

In Austin on April 4 legislators battled over a $26,800,000 social security appropriation veto and a rice milling tax to fund an Arkansas Louisiana cooperation program. The House rejected a reconsideration motion 63 to 53 and sent a milled rice tax bill to the Senate. The Senate debated a House approved driver license bill with a 75 cent biennial permit fee opposed by Sen. Aiken who favored funding highway safety from gasoline tax.
