Two Men Charged in Negro Lynching Near Crockett
W A Ackley aged 74 and his nephew Paul Ackley 24 both farmers and relatives of a white woman accused Davie Tillis a 52 year old black man of insulting her. They were charged with murder in connection with the lynching. Sheriff Hazlett sought three more men after the arrest in the Austonia community near Black Jack forest where Tillis was seized from Arch Maples who was a sheriff candidate and hanged to a black jack tree.

Dr John H Vaughan recovered a $750 radium needle lost in a large ash pile. Using a fluoroscope he searched in a Fisk building janitor’s mop basin then the basement incinerator ash. The needle remained intact after exposure to fire and was found gleaming in the ashes.

Marvin Salter of Dallas, 40, the kidnapper who abducted chief deputy sheriff Clam C. Hill at Gilmer, was killed in a gunfight with Policeman Huntsman after turning a shotgun on the officer. Huntsman was wounded in the shoulder. Salter fired with a 45 pistol. A sedan held narcotics, a shotgun, and a pistol. Hill was released hours after questioning.
