Incumbent Willis E Harrison ran unopposed and received 377 votes. Write in ballots were counted. The election was noted as the largest in several years.
In Paris Viet Cong spokesman Ly Van Sau condemned further US military aid to South Vietnam as risking a new Vietnam War. He called US prisoner of war allegations an ugly smear campaign by President Nixon and accused Washington of trying to whitewash war crimes amid fruitless negotiations with Saigon to form a council for elections.
