Knapp Indicted Over Stamp Funds Faces Trial Timing
Travis County D A Bob Smith said he gathered information on lawmakers who used postage stamps to pay debts as terms expired in 1970. Former State Sen Walter Knapp of Amarillo was indicted on charges of using 1200 in stamps to buy a pickup from Plains Chevrolet and could be tried within two weeks if he wished. Knapp complained about trial timing before the primary and alleged a conspiracy with incumbent Tom Curtis, which Smith denied. Knapp is to be arraigned Thursday before Judge Thomas D Blackwell. Red Simpson posted the bond for Knapp after his arrest on a fugitive warrant.
