Rogers proposing to buy an elementary school site in southwest Amarillo, but the board deferred action.
Harold Mohr was indicted on murder and voluntary manslaughter charges for the mercy killing of his blind cancer stricken brother Walter, 55, in Lehigh County. The 36 year old tannery worker appeared before Judge James F. Henninger after a 22 member grand jury returned a true bill, pleading not guilty as the trial was set to begin. Mohr admitted shooting his brother through the head with a deer rifle on March 8.
Senator Henry Cabot Lodge Jr urged a bipartisan commission to reassess the State Department inquiry linking Reds to the department. He warned current hearings smear innocents and fail to expose real Communist leaders. McCarthy supported a nonpartisan confidential study as the feud over loyalty files and a Lattimore defection memo intensified.

US News and World Report says competent evidence suggests flying saucers are real U S military aircraft of revolutionary design with the Navy said to be developing them. The Navy confirms limited saucer shape craft existed but not jet versions and notes it built only one piston engine model that never flew.
A cold front and clouds swept the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles with snow flurries and light rain in northeastern portions while Amarillo saw a rapid temperature drop from 86 to 47 by evening. Childress reported the year's worst dust storm with 35 to 40 mph winds after a 94 degree high, cutting visibility to a quarter mile.

Linda Helen Owens was born at St Anthony's Hospital at 6 30 PM to Mr and Mrs Herbert A Owens Jr of 31249 West Sixth. The newborn weighs 8 pounds 2 ounces and joins Amarillo’s population.

Governor Shivers sets May 6 for a special congressional election to fill the unexpired Worley term as Worley becomes a Washington judge. County judges must set a candidate filing deadline and ballots while allowing 20 days for absentee voting. 28 county judges will convene to organize and determine the proper legal route since no specific statute governs such elections.
