Gov. O'Daniel announces re election run in a 24 page radio address. He backs a one percent transaction tax plus other plans to raise 60 million for social security and to cut the state deficit in four years. He urges voters to elect officials who will support his program.
Plainview prepares to host 3046 students from 42 towns for the Region 1 Music Educators' Association three day band conference. Registrations include 3 orchestras and 21 choruses with bands ranging from class EE to A. Pampa leads entrants with five bands and four choruses. solo and ensemble events start Thursday morning, with marching contests Friday and Saturday.
ABERNATHY April 3 Special With 40 ballots cast the smallest city election turnout since 1937. O. Rutledge reelected marshal without opposition. N C Hix 21 votes and H E Richer 28 votes to be reelected aldermen. Other candidates McAllister 10 Anderson 10 Turpen 5 Graham 4. Only six women voted, a heavy sandstorm kept many at home.
The state road department extended a bid invitation dated April 15 for multiple projects. The notice includes a Hutchinson area package numbered 117, involving grading from five miles north of Borger to seventeen miles north of Borger, adding several roadway works.
Heavy rains resumed in the Susquehanna flood zone from New York headwaters to Wilkes-Barre and Towanda. Sleet and hail accompanied the downpour as observers warned only a prolonged heavy fall could reverse the crest. Emergency crews reinforced Guardian dikes near Wilkes-Barre and Sunbury while thousands remain homeless in the valley.
Services were held at First Baptist Church in Tulia for Mrs. T. Johnson who died in Pampa. The former Louise McFarling, daughter of Dr. C. W. McFarling, she is survived by husband, two sons Tom Jr and Charles, and three brothers and two sisters including C. W. McFarling Jr of Tulia and Mrs. Hubert Wilson of Tulia.
George Baucom a ninth grade student at Horace Mann School stayed after hours to finish lessons in his history room. He found the door locked and night fell as he lit the room. Children nearby and his parents helped locate the caretaker George A. Reed who freed him.
Five Matador city officials were returned to office Tuesday without opposition. G. T. Edwards was reappointed mayor, W. N. Pipkin and M. B. Patton were reappointed aldermen, Howard Edmondson was re-elected city secretary, and L. J. Barkley remained marshal.
Walter Childress topped the alderman race with 54 votes and Lloyd Wofford earned 68 votes to secure reelection. They defeated Lee Cope land with 39 votes and Hugh Robert 150n with 25 votes.
Berlin dispatch reports Field Marshal Hermann Goering told millions of German children that Hitler has mobilized all resources for a decisive blow in the west. Goering urged attack on Britain and France as Brauchitsch inspected Rhineland troops. Nazi leaders touted victory while planes raided a British convoy and Scapa Flow ships were hit.
The Amarillo Safety Council's traffic recommendations will be reviewed at a 10 o clock city commission meeting. Proposals include seven motorized officers, right turns on red, system renovations, moved bus loading zones, and an accident reporting system per the state highway department. West Sixth Avenue would become a through street from Georgia to Belleview with stop signs, and parking rules would restrict north-side parking between Tennessee and Maryland, implement angle parking only with a curb setback, and limit parking to 30 minutes elsewhere.
About 20 San Jacinto merchants met with Mayor Ross Rogers and the city commission and withdrew their challenge to the Sixth Avenue Georgia Street island as long as it does not block West Sixth widening and a safety concern at 2600 West Sixth Street. The island value was set at 3000 by residents and 6750 by a county commission. Elmer Lewis owner offered 7500 for buildings and underground tanks with a 48 hour deadline.
All city officials ran unopposed in the election. Sam W. Smith received 138 votes for mayor, Wesley Boone 101 for aldermen and Al Lemond 128 for the other seat, with Dennis Scaling 36 votes as a third candidate. Tom Barbee 137 votes was named marshal.
PF Banks, a farmer near Pi C, lowered a two-gallon vacuum milk jug into a well for cooling. The handle pulled out, the jug sank, and nine years later, while cleaning the well, it was recovered with milk still good. The milk sample clabbered on the way to town.
Port authorities in Genoa say a fire in the number one hold of the United States liner Manhattan was caused by a broken box of chemicals. The blaze broke out yesterday and was extinguished with minor damage.
The marble king of Amarillo will be crowned this afternoon at Central Junior High School with a dozen contestants representing city schools. Lions Club sponsors organize both this event and a district tourney in Dumas on April 11. Local champions listed include M L Leffel, Jack Grasstack, Jack Seale, and Ellis Ray Currie. Seale won Wilson School marble title yesterday. the public is invited to attend. Housing project in Marshall rejected 982 to 795 in Tuesday’s election.
Allied air scouts on the Western Front claim at least five German planes down Tuesday as artillery crashes occur in three sectors. Goering asserts Germany will use all resources for a decisive western blow while planes claim raids on the British convoy and Scapa Flow. Neutrals monitor Luxembourg and Netherlands responses as Turkey signals neutrality.
The House appropriations committee slashed the army’s next fiscal year supply bill to 785,999,094 dollars, 67,357,660 below Roosevelt’s request, sending the measure to the House floor for debate. An appropriations subcommittee in the Senate approved a 25 million dollar increase for civil functions, mainly for rivers and harbors, while trimming airbase and procurement items.
In Tulia on April 3 Special the case of W. T. Simmons charged with the death of 76 year old Lulu Widgren Hand sister of Louis B. Hand will be postponed to the next district court term. Simmons was given life imprisonment Tuesday after a jury found him guilty of murdering Hand. Sheriff Hugh White said he will transport him to Huntsville soon.
The Russian parliament unanimously adopted the government’s 1940 budget in Moscow on April 3. Defense expenditures are set at 57,000,000,000 rubles, surpassing last year’s 40,885,000,000 rubles in the largest defense appropriation in Soviet history.

London April 3 The Earl of Athlone brother of Queen Mary and former governor general of the Union of South Africa was appointed Governor General of Canada to succeed the late Lord Tweedsmuir. He will be 66 on April 14 and is expected to depart for Ottawa in two to three weeks with Princess Alice.
