A man identified as of 1415 Roberts was indicted Friday by the Potter County grand jury on a charge of assault with intent to murder. The charge stems from the March 19 stabbing of Gilbert J. Arias, 18, of 1604 Cleveland. The case appears on Page 2.
Polls open 7 a m to 7 p m for Amarillo Independent School District and Amarillo Junior College District trustee and bond elections. Seven people seek two school board seats and eight contend for three college regent posts. A proposed 5 million dollar bond would add to 7.5 million planned expansion including five new campus buildings and a four building vocational complex. Incumbents are Stone and Johnson on the school board. Smith and McAfee on the college board.
President Johnson told his cabinet to cut federal spending sharply aiming to save about $1 billion in three months. The move targets inflation and the current year deficit, with the June 30 end date in sight as war costs push the deficit higher than earlier estimates.
The Amarillo College Board of Regents asks voters to approve a 5 million bond to fund a vocational school library and new classrooms with 244 million TEA match. The plan supports youth training, university credit transfer, and rapid local benefits in skilled labor. The cost estimates total under 5 cents per hundred valuation, about 7 dollars yearly.
Nobles of Hereford and Fiedler of Amarillo won top honors at the ninth annual Texas Panhandle Science Fair in the Tascosa High School Auditorium. Nobles won senior high botany for Radioactive Phosphorus Uptake and Movement in Plants. Fiedler won senior high girls medicine and health for Snake Bite.
The Federal Board of Parole freed Harry Gold and Irvin C. Scarbeck. Gold, 55, Swiss-born, served 15 of 30 years for conspiring to pass national defense information to the Soviet Union. Scarbeck, 45, served 42 years on three concurrent 10-year terms for supplying the Polish security police with classified embassy documents in Warsaw.
The KRIM-TV tower near Hagerman collapses Friday, leaving a 390 foot stub after a 1,839 foot structure falls. No injuries reported but the CBS station will stay off air for over a week while inspectors from South Carolina determine cause and rebuilding proceeds.
Amarillo man L. V. Thomas Jr. 23 reported missing in action in Viet Nam on an evacuation mission to save 1st Cavalry members. Willis A. Thomas 21, also in the valley, was reportedly brought out. The brothers volunteered for Viet Nam duty after leaving Amarillo January 15. L. V. had earlier served in the Dominican crisis.
In Miami Beach two days after a prior crime, a flashy blonde and two men robbed the Tra bert-Hoeffer jewelry store, netting about 500000 in cash and jewels. Police report a man and a woman in slacks gained entry claiming an appointment with owner Allen Cuttler. The man produced a gun and admitted a second man.
Washington negotiators and AFL CIO leader Gilbert say a settlement is near after a two day rail strike. Potential damage lawsuits against the union and reprisals are to be avoided, with railroads estimating daily losses around 3.5 million dollars and wages lost at about 320000 a day. Labor officials await union presidents and railroad heads to confirm terms.
The Senate approved a two month extension for enrolling in the doctor’s bill portion of Medicare. The deadline for those aged 65 and older was moved from midnight to May 31, with retroactive effect to March 31 if the House concurs next week.
New York AP reports stocks advanced as the Dow gained 6.52 to 931.29 while rails and industrials rose on Friday. Trading volume reached 9.06 million shares amid a nationwide railroad strike impacting eight major railroads in 38 states and about 65 000 auto workers idled or with reduced hours.
