A Mid-Continent oil region glimpse shows prospect of rising wages and improved pay schedules as companies signal potential wage increases. Analysts note lingering concerns among workers about job security while optimism grows for broader growth in the energy sector.
The industry saw a halting rise in crude prices to $1 per barrel across the midcontinent with Magnolia Petroleum matching the move and East Texas crude at 98 cents. Continental Oil’s March 24 plan to pay $1 on April 1 sparked industry jubilation as independents followed the pace and set top prices for various grades.
Representative Albert H. Vestal of Indiana 57, longtime Republican whip and former chairman of the House Patents and Copyrights Committee, died of a heart ailment after an artery closure while on the floor. He was taken to the Naval Hospital and died there as the House kept working on the tax bill.

Three year old Gerald Collins survived an 11 hour entrapment in a drill hole at the Mary Ann mine in Pitcher Oklahoma. He escaped without broken bones and was praised for a rapid recovery as miners opened a parallel shaft to reach him.
A fashion parade displaying General Motors models and other goods will cruise Polk Street at 4 PM with eight local firms. Nine men compete for four Amarillo independent school district board seats in a high spirited race. Candidates include Dr. R P Parcells Dr W M Curl and W A Askew seeking re election and Judge G A L Morgan W L Speer Jr W H Van Shaw Dr D Roach Fred Gallo and M L Fleming. Polls open at 8 am with four ballot boxes at courthouse San Jacinto and Buchanan schools and Sixteenth Street Fire Station.
Mrs. Annie Walker a 46 year old widow at 2100 South Wilson Street was bitten on the nose by a rat while asleep Friday morning. Doctors said the rat had bitten through the nose and she awakened to a painful scene with blood streaming down her face. She reported ongoing rat problems at her home.
April 4 5 meetings before the Texas Highway Commission will discuss road finance and construction. U S Highway 177 extension from Dallas to Brownsville will be proposed. Bids expected total 1 652 000. Delegations from Dallas and other counties request extensions and new segments including Highway 17 to Mentone and Highway 66 plus paving Highway 18 for 105 miles.
Homer Clemons Bartlesville World War veteran who disappeared February 7 en route to Muskogee to enter Veterans Hospital has been located in a Muskogee hotel this afternoon. He was previously employed by Philipp Oil Company in Borger Texas.
The Chevrolet Motor Car Company cut prices by 10 to 55 dollars effective today with the five window coupe down from 545 to 490 and the Standard sedan from 635 to 590. W E Knudsen announced Chevrolet would continue to build only six cylinder cars and had no plan for an eight cylinder model. The new list plus former prices were released.
Charlene Scowcroft known as the Queen of Engineers Week at the University of Utah was kidnapped by three youths and held for about an hour before being returned to the campus. The incident disrupted events during April 1.
A Denver jury convicts three men Arthur M. Taylor Joseph Parnell and George W Reed of abducting Benjamin P. Bower a Denver bakery manager on January 19. After 23 hours of deliberation the jury asks for leniency noting alibis as the defendants claim they were at a party. Bower was held in a shack on the city outskirts for five days and released after midnight on the fifth day without ransom paid.

The Holmes gas well number 3 of British American Oil Co. in Oklahoma City caught fire this afternoon three blocks from Wheeler grade school. Fire spread to nearby tanks as flow was shut off. local and oil field firefighters fought the blaze with chemicals amid a residential area.

H. H. Burns former Shelby County sheriff was found guilty of extortion linked to fee collection during his tenure and sentenced by a Travis County district court jury to two years in the penitentiary.

Dr. Evan O Neill Kane of Summit Hospital in Kane Pennsylvania dies of pneumonia at 71 after fame for two self operations. He operated on himself for appendicitis 11 years ago and again on January 7 for inguinal hernia. He recovered quickly in both cases and was aided by a nurse during the procedures.
Mrs. Frank Braslau formerly Sylvia Zalinsky of San Antonio lies in critical condition after swallowing squid poison in her hotel room in Laredo. Her husband, a Corpus Christi furniture dealer, had planned to extend the honeymoon to Monterrey before returning home.
Mrs. A. F. Braun 84 was badly hurt when her son William Braun backed a car from a garage and ran over her. The injury was serious and authorities feared she could die.
Troy Windham, a 74 year old pioneer cattleman of Pecos, died at his home. He spent more than 50 years riding the cattle ranges and was reputed to have branded more calves than any other cattleman in the region.
