Altus mothers with Kay club help stage a house to house polio drive from 6 30 p m signaling by porch or candle lights. Funds go to KWHW with captains PTAs and local volunteers tallying totals. Benefit events at four drug stores added 221 37 to the fund.
Altus Air Force Base advances a $16 million expansion with a new bid opening set for February 14 for a security control building. Army Engineers issued notices for bids on two more base projects while contracts on two prior jobs totaling $350,000 have been let.
Committee chairmen from Altus and base representatives will convene at 10 A M Wednesday at the air base for talks on base community relations. Six base attendees include Col Templeman and Lt Thorndike among others. also mentions new duty at Bergstrom AFB and a county 4 H canning school led by Hermina Dohogne for county girls.
The Gypsies, a pro group from Oklahoma City, will perform at the Altus Chamber of Commerce banquet on February 14 at the high school. The program adds music and costume showcase as the event moves away from a principal speaker. Attendance is capped at 500. tickets are $2 and on sale at the Chamber office Thursday.

The Jackson County United Health Fund drive surpassed a quarter of its goal with 349 firms and individuals pledging 3360 dollars for Red Cross cancer heart disease and mental health. Rev. Lyman T. Cockerill announced progress at a Rotary luncheon with reports from Business and Professional Women Kiwanis Lions and Rotary groups.
Altus Chamber of Commerce to present a Vernon Chamber of Commerce annual banquet program in the Wilbarger Memorial auditorium Vernon. W R Williams will sing with Tommy Cotner at piano. Cotner is a Midwestern University student and son of Altus residents Harold and Mrs Cotner. Attendees include Altus Chamber reps and local Boy Scout leaders. Principal speaker is Dr Arthur A Shuch from New York City chief executive for the Boy Scouts of America.
Applications from 129 Jackson county youths for the Altus Chamber of Commerce broiler project were approved. A total of 6 450 baby chicks will be distributed with each child receiving 50 chicks to raise and return a portion to sponsors as repayment.
Arkansas preacher Rev. Braxton B. Sawyer told a legislative committee that a nudist club formed in Oklahoma City by dancer Evelyn West sparked the bill to outlaw nudism in Oklahoma. Four Kansans testified as sunbathers. no Oklahoma nudists attended. The hearing drew about 200 people as Rep. James Fespermant’s bill was reviewed by the House Legal Advisory Committee in Oklahoma City.
Ralph Hiett of Altus injured in a Sunday car truck crash near Stratford Oklahoma is being moved from an Ada hospital to Memorial hospital in Altus. His father R K Hiett of Vinson shows great improvement while another Vinson man W E Skages was hurt but not believed critical.
C. R. Horton of El Reno, state exalted ruler of the Elks, will visit the Altus lodge Wednesday night. Paul Mack, local exalted ruler, urges all members to attend as dinner precedes the business session where Horton will speak and a group of candidates will be initiated for membership.

Oklahoma City January 25 The bill would create a single three member board to oversee 21 state institutions and abolish the Mental Health Board. Dr H H Donahue warns it would slow mental hospital progress and says he would resign if passed. Gov Gary has not endorsed it but lawmakers are urged to review. House passes first 25th session bill waiving ad valorem penalties in Tulsa and Muskogee until Feb 15. Gov Raymond Gary and legislative leaders agreed to a bill to split the State Crime Bureau from the Safety Department. The Safety Department would enforce traffic laws with the Highway Patrol as primary, while the Crime Bureau would handle other criminal statutes including prohibition. Gary opposed using highway patrolmen for Kejuor law enforcement.
Funeral services for C. B. Booker 66 of route one Headrick will be held at 2 p m Wednesday at the Headrick Church of Christ conducted by B R Darnell with helpers Rev Noel George and Rev B L Smith. Rose Croix services will follow at the church by Guthrie Altus Scottish Rite under Altus Scottish Rite Club. Booker a 32nd degree Mason died Monday in Memorial hospital after about a month illness. Tima Funeral Home in charge with burial in Headrick cemetery.
Oklahoma Governor Raymond Gary accepted the resignation of L. E. Chatham the state civil defense director after an audit cited him for collecting double travel money. Chatham of Claremore denied improper collection and Tom Brett Jr was named acting director. Gary had planned to abolish the agency and transfer duties to the governor’s office.
A 73 year old Tulsa man identified as Pinky Taylor died at 3 a.m. Tuesday from internal injuries after jaywalking into an ambulance on an emergency run June 1. The death raises Oklahoma highway deaths to 35 for 1955 versus 45 at the same time last year.
