In Rome in 1870 a man sees a luminous figure resembling friend John Grayle who claims a hollow oak holds clues to the killer. Back in America he and artist friend Thiel investigate a murder tied to a rival Gonzalvo Duprez. A letter from the hollow oak names the impostor and, after detective help, Duprez confesses before dying in prison.
Placerville notes James W. Marshall who discovered gold at Sutter's Fort in 1848 died impoverished in Coloma. The article chronicles his early life in New Jersey and Kansas, his Bear Flag era service, move to Coloma to build a mill, discovery of gold, and subsequent ruin as claim and property were exploited, with minimal state aid.

Walter H Lennox Maxwell alias T C D Aughier alias Hugh M Brooks suspected of killing O Arthur Preller at the Southern Hotel last April arrives from San Francisco under guard. A crowd of 2000 3000 watches at the depot as Maxwell remains silent. Police plan further action with the Sheriff pending.
An estimated 40 000 visitors filed past Gen. Grant's tomb at Claremont on Sunday amid perfect order. Crowds along park roads, extra trains on elevated lines, and a long queue formed by noon. Guards watched the regular soldiers camp as families neared the tents and a note of reverence marked the scene. Lieutenant Brownell, who killed Ellsworth's slayer at Alexandria, was among the visitors.
Washington dispatch reports Gen S Burdett says G A R veterans in Gettysburg and Springfield favor a Washington monument to Gen Grant funded by small per member subscriptions. Burdett opposes a Grant grave monument funded by the nation and argues the G A R should raise a modest own monument. Also notes brief local items from Columbus GA and Georgia politics.
