Alton merchants list assorted footwear and clothing with wide price ranges. Men's shoes 1.50 to 8, boys best button 2.25, ladies gloves 2.50, kid tops 2.50, men and women’s suits priced from about 7.65 to 20, some items low but others much higher especially ladies hats and bonnets up twenty percent.
Washington May 12. Assistant Treasurer Graves's successor unnamed. rumors point to A G Collins of Batavia New York, but the Treasury denies any decision. Officials expect a promotion from within the Bureau to ensure capable handling of duties.
In Sleepy Hollow New York at Cut No 9 on the new aqueduct a tunnel explosion killed two workers and fatally injured two others. Fifteen men were in the heading when the blast occurred and several more were nearby. Michael Quinn died under rocks while George Halbert and Joseph Fesjua were badly hurt. Hul bert died later. an unnamed assistant was fatally injured. Coroner investigations began but were postponed. The blast likely occurred when a drill struck and discharged an unexploded charge.
In Baurimone Missouri a letter demanding ten cents more pay per ton from George's Creek miners reached coal company presidents. Most managers were absent, delaying talks. Operators oppose recognizing independent labor committees and will likely hold a conference in the George's Creek area to decide action. At Carlsa Massachusetts a fire alarm noted two two story wooden buildings burning around noon.
In New York the Supreme Court refused an injunction against North German Lloyd to land forty musicians under a foreign work contract, ruling the act is new and the men already arrived. The case stems from the new Congress ban on imports under foreign contracts. the writ was dismissed after musicians had landed.
Preparations at the navy yard to send the Dispatch and Minnesota to meet the French transport Isere bearing the Barthold statue. The ships will be in readiness and decorated with French and American flags. Salutes will be fired from the vessels and forts as the Isere sails up the bay, with American crews cheering.
Lieutenant Ripley said Augustine Jurado, brought from New York on suspicion of killing Filippo Caruso, described buying a trunk and checking it at the depot and suspects Omarion Loacinon. Expressman Charles Jr identified Jurado as one of two Italians who hired him. Andrew Rusbo, arrested on suspicion, has been discharged.
At a joint meeting of old soldiers in Pirrswomen Pennsylvania the assembled veterans from Allegheny County adopted a unanimous resolution calling on Senators and Representatives to vote promptly on a measure honoring a fallen comrade. The gathering, held at City Hall, drew members from both political groups.
Wm. Wright was arrested in Terre Haute and brought to town on a train robbery charge. He claims an alibi, insisting Weber will set him free, but his story clashes with his wife and father. Officials doubt the letter found was in his handwriting, and a key witness may arrive tomorrow.
The six days race at Madison Square Garden draws crowds as Noremac quits after sixteen miles. Madducks leads with 276 miles at midnight ahead of Snowden and Walton’s record, with 266 and 275 miles respectively, as of May 12.
Ottawa reports Lord Melgund hurried back to advise the government on the unsatisfactory Northwest situation. Parliament heard that infantry were sent instead of cavalry, and the Duck Lake fight report had been received but not expanded upon by Sir John MacDonald.
Francis Ht Stevens filed a petition in Barvimont Missouri seeking removal of John V L as co receiver in the Jones Stevens vs Bankers & Merchants Telegraph Company case. It alleges six months of inaction, ongoing expenses, and potential reorganization in New York to allow sale of encumbered interests to the company. The petition requests appointment of state receivers to sell under encumbrances of 000 and 10,000,000.
The United Order of Foresters has been declared insolvent in Vigo County. Judge Davie approved the appointment of J. E. Somes as Receiver. Liabilities around 40000 dollars with 15000 to 20000 unpaid death losses totaling about 57000 dollars in liabilities. Assets expected to be small.
