The committee heard Hon. Timothy Campbell of New York argue for an 83 million appropriation to purchase sites for New York City public buildings. Washington May 1 The House committee on public lands reconsidered last week’s action on the senate bill annexing the public land strip to Kansas by attaching it to New Mexico.

Patrick Egan, ex-president of the Irish League in America, says the decree stems from British intrigue and will be repudiated. Lovuisville Kentucky May 1 Sarah Thompson a 15 year old mulatto is jailed as a murderess after stabbing Jesse during a dispute over infidelity. Walter Jewel a coachman is named as her lover. A second Kentucky item describes Josephine Ammon jailed six weeks for withholding a missing heir Josie Blann in Ohio case. A third item notes Gen Johnston being considered for honorary Grand Army of the Republic status and potential post discipline.
A northbound passenger train on the Atlantic Coast Line wrecked miles south of Enfield on the Wilmington and Weldon line. Four coaches left the track and five or six passengers were hurt. a Richmond newsboy, William Morgan, is said to be fatally injured. In New York a kerosene lamp explosion badly burned Mia Faist and her two sons Emil and Charles. the two children died, mother and another child are reported okay, while steamship losses were noted.
Milwaukee reports a freight train plunged through a Chippewa River bridge at Bruce early Monday. Several train hands reportedly hurt with details scarce. no fatalities confirmed. Nearby, a fatal church festival shooting in Bynum leaves multiple victims and wounded, and London tin market reacts with a sharp price drop amid a panic.
At Braddock Edgar Thomson Steel works workers faced continued lockout with talks of compromise after hours of negotiation. In St Louis over 8,000 union brewers face a May 1 contract expiry as employers refuse renewal and threaten a mass walkout. In Cincinnati and Crxcixgall coopers align to pool beer restrictions and union-run brewing to absorb workers.

In Dansury a large hat factory closes for reorganizing, throwing 1,100 workers out. Floods threaten Eau Claire and Porterville with homes evacuated and riverside mills submerged. Emperor of Germany ill but stable, with varied bulletins. Croydon Flat loses a pulp mill and dam to high water. three men fatally injured in a Rusuvuce tile mill blast.
Herbert Newell, an engineer, was shot dead while fleeing a confrontation with striking workers. George S Cable, a striking fireman, was wounded in the head. W A Hedberg, a Burlington fireman, confessed to the shooting and surrendered. An inquest will probe whether another striker followed Hedberg. The report also notes the Irish Volunteers organization forming in New York with secret inner circles and plans for action.
Mrs. John Quillen suffered severe burns after a lamp exploded on Sunday night igniting her dresses. She leaped from a window about thirty feet to a brick pavement. Mrs. Kilroy and her husband Coleman Kilroy were injured but expect to recover.
In Merriwether county a mill was broken into and Henry Will and Parkman were jailed awaiting trial. On Saturday armed men seized them from officers and Parkman was beaten to death. Will Iames carried Parkman’s body to a creek and then escaped after severe injuries.
In New York on May 1 a meeting is urged for Friday evening at Cooper Union to approve Mayor Hewitt action on hoisting foreign flags over city public buildings. More than 17 000 signatures praise the mayor and denounce the aldermen and assembly for insulting the city’s head government.
Wester, a 12-year-old boy, is held on a manslaughter charge after a fatal incident near Ninth and Mefie streets. Althea Foster, 10, died from a head wound after a water fight among neighborhood children turned violent on a porch.
A duel occurred in the Bois de Boulogne on a Saturday between two art critics named Dupuis and vert. Dupuis sustained wounds before being carried to Lonpox. The steamer Smyrna sank after a collision off the Isle of Wight, with 13 people drowning.
