New York on February 1 reports violent clashes with police and mass hiring of 700 replacements for streetcar workers. Strikers grow hostile while employers vow to increase car service with green hires amid ongoing arbitration rejection. Disorder persists along Broadway and Sixth Avenue with police commanding order.
In Bapoxius New York on February 1 the force of about 700 policemen including captains were placed on duty along the Fifth avenue line. A crowd of strikers was cleared from near the stables at Atlantic and Third avenues. Secretary Richardson dispatched a Fifth avenue car with twenty two mounted officers and two sergeants to guard it. Richardson, twelve officers and two reporters boarded the car.
Local assembly No. 791 of the Knights of Labor, comprising machinery constructors and blacksmiths, the city's oldest group and progenitor of district assembly No. 3, decides to withdraw. A meeting is set for next Saturday night to vote on the move amid labor interest and local upheaval.
Four girls employed at Higgins carpet factory faced arraignment for disorderly conduct near the plant. Faith McElhane Maggie Ryan Emily Reyer and Katie Hazey were charged. Maggie Ryan allegedly threw a missile at Sarah E Fox and was held on 900 bail. The others faced 90 bail for good behavior with Senator Plunkett posting bail for all.

Washington January 31 Sen Allison ordered his committee room door locked to avoid intruders and to clear mail. He briefly answered a United Press question about a reported conference with Mr Blaine after returning from Indianapolis. He said he had not seen Mr Blaine since arriving in Washington. Friends think he will not join the cabinet.
In Deracr Michigan on February 1 Catholics rejoice over Bishop Burges prohibition on church fairs and excursions. Bishop Foley disputes the ban saying fairs can occur under priestly supervision and excursions for charity or pleasure are acceptable if no intoxicants are sold. The bishop will attend many events to oversee them.
In Carcano on Feb 1 Judge Tut hill presided as the jury acquitted Mrs. Meckie L. Rawson of attempted murder of her husband's lawyer Maj. Whitney. The verdict came after 8 PM with one juror initially leaning guilty before joining the majority. The panel found she was insane at the time and not legally responsible.
Republican senators met in caucus to draft a bill for statehood for Washington, Montana, the Dakotas, and to push it this session if possible. A strong sentiment favored admission of New Mexico to be excluded from the bill.
C B Bart and Co, lumber dealers of Lander, Pa, have made an assignment for the benefit of creditors. Liabilities are estimated at 100000 dollars, with 5000 to 6500 dollars set for preferred creditors.
