A local notice states on December 18 that the entire stock will be closed out with no planned 30 day sale. The seller insists there are no new goods arriving and aims to sell quickly to avoid closing before April. Call to verify prices and stock.
A Louisville to Chicago passenger train plunged through a Howe truss bridge over the White River at Broad Ripple eight miles from the city. Seven people died and several were injured as cars sank and burned, with passengers and rescuers facing extreme peril amid flames and water.
In St Louis on February 1 a police pursuit ends with a bullet lodging in a suspect's arm after an officer tries to fire into the air to stop him. Earlier, Officer Hickey who pursued a thief is noted for his courage. Charles Burns is captured after evading a chase in Collins street yards. Also General Hancock denies giving political opinions in a Times interview, calling it fabrication.
Percival KR Levy about 19 arrived from New Orleans killed himself by morphine at 104 Court Short. Dr G P Thornton found poison and a nearly empty morphine bottle in Levy’s trunk. A letter to a telegraph operator stated his resolve to kill himself. A diary notes domestic trouble and feeling mistreated by his father L C Levy, a New Orleans grocer. Levy had been in Memphis about a month, supported himself, and showed modest means and education.
Willie Hall identified by Cherry’s children at his preliminary examination in Carriton Missouri. Children in field with the victim recognized him when he began to run though he wore a disguise. Prosecution attorney leads the case with A L Thomas defending. Separate note from Cannonpack Illinois reports a temporary Normal building dedication in Carbondale valued at $10,000 with remarks by local and state educators.
Washington Feb. 1 The House Appropriations sub committee prepares its report on the navy bill with Judge Holman predicting a cut of 1,500,009 and a total of 16,500,000. He questions completion of double turreted monitors and urges caution on new ships while noting existing steel cruisers. Democratic members privately pressure to limit funding under Secretary Chandler amid contractor concerns involving John Roach.
Charley Cope and Miss Mary Porter, aged under nineteen, married despite parental objections on religious grounds. The elder Cope pressed charges, Cope was jailed in a House of Refuge, and he secured habeas corpus through the County court as supporters seek his release.
A Nashville report tells of Dr E P Hawthorne's son who fell into a mysterious decline after claiming to glimpse a buried, grave-clothes clad body in a church on a rain night. He was seized by two men who boasted of exhuming the young lady and warned him not to reveal the incident. The grave was later found opened and the corpse missing.
