A massive Read ing railroad strike ties up coal shipments from Pottsville to Philadelphia. Rail crews desert engines as management fights the Knights of Labor. Officials warn forty eight mines across the anthracite region may close within days.
The first convention of Reading railway employees in Porcapermia Pa met to discuss coal miners’ disputes at Port Richmond and Elizabethport. A general strike was ordered on all Reading lines except passenger service, including mine workers, with 150 men said to be discharged amid unresolved arbitration talks.
Telegrams of condolence pour in for ex secretary of the treasury Daniel Manning. Leaders including President Cleveland and cabinet members pledge mourning and attend the funeral in Ausany New York with no ticketing. New York officials order flags at half mast as political figures praise Manning’s ability and leadership.
Gen. R. A. Alger distributes gifts in Michigan and California. About 1,500 newsboys will receive suits, and over 1,000 families get coal and flour, with the rest of the winter spent at a lumber camp in Redwood. Gift plans remain secret from recipients. A separate San Remo telegram notes Crown Prince Frederick Wilhelm’s Christmas tokens arrive from Germany, including a tree and decorative items.
Telegrams from many nations report the Christmas holidays inaugurated in the traditional manner. Rich areas saw generous charity in many households while churches were crowded with worshippers and festive anthems enhancing the season. Chicago also observed the holiday in a similar spirit.
In Arnay New York on December 27 the Woman's Christian Temperance Union donated 1100 boxes of toilet articles to convicts at the prison. In Bethnal Green Baroness Burdett Coutts gave beef and groceries worth 500 to residents of her estate. A Rome dispatch notes President Cleveland sent a bound copy of the U.S. Constitution to the pope via Cardinal Gibbona in Baltimore. In Chicago Daniel Carbery’s stable at 2515 Hanover burned, 28 draft horses perished, damage 15000 dollars, insured.
Fire broke out at 9 5 tonight in the state penitentiary and completely destroyed the meat house. The loss is estimated at men and the panic among prisoners was described as little or none. In St Perenseans Russia a rumor of czar assassination surfaced after a secret door was found beneath and leading to the imperial box in the Marie theatre. Dusit reports Captain Danne, jailed for trial on firing at Rev Henry Melville, was admitted to further proceedings.
Atoka December 27 a bold train robbery near Atoka on the Missouri Kansas Texas line ended without injuries. Two initial robbers boarded the engine, joined by five more, and threatened the express messenger John Grenshaw and baggage-master who barricaded the mail and Pullman cars. After thirty minutes the bandits fled with no payout as Grenshaw earned praise for his cool defense.
In Laurel county Kentucky Bal Chumley and Hugh McHargue were aboard a train to Mount Vernon. Walter Mullins, a friend of McHargue, drew Chumley from the car. a pistol duel followed on a tunnel platform and both men fell from the moving train. Mullins died. Chumley was mortally wounded.

Littleton editor of The National Review a Republican weekly was shot by real estate dealer Joseph R Banks at about 9 00 am on High Street Nashville Banks a factionist supporter fired with a double barreled shotgun striking Littleton in the liver and groin He collapsed cried Oh Lord Banks surrendered and Littleton later showed little chance of recovery as doctors reported serious wounds and rest was easier Sunday morning
Traveling man T Gregg reports from Wichita that the Keily family is linked to a mass murder spree. Investigators found seven bodies near a house and barn, including one unburied corpse, with one likely identified as Jim Cowen. Police await coordinated action as more details emerge.
Michael O'Brien, arrested with others for forging custom house signatures to obtain 15009 dollars worth of silks, is unknown to Inspector Byrnes who will not reveal his identity. The inspector continues to seek the prisoner’s associates as a careful search proceeds.
A historical digest notes O'Brien who moved to the city thirty years ago and led a gang of gentlemen swindlers while forging for a living. Edward Buckley a puddler at the Elmira Iron and Steel Rolling mill died from bruises carried after a fight with fellow puddler Halloran. Halloran has been arrested.
In Louisville rumors say Senator Beck will move to Louisville for political reasons. Senator Blackburn from Versailles fears Beck’s re election harming his own bid, with anti Beck delegates freed after Dr Standiford’s death. A pact now has Beck renouncing the blue grass home and taking residence in Louisville.
A Salomon family quarrel ends at a railroad crossing as James Salomon is struck by a train and killed, his wife nearby kissing his severed head in grief. Other items note bookmaker Jim Adams challenging Jake Kilrain to a Dempsey fight, Morgan suing The New York Herald, and a fatal train accident near Rhinebeck involving O Neill’s son and daughter.
Parnell's health shows clear improvement as he plans to spend Christmas with Mr. O'Shea in Eithem Kent. He is expected to address his constituents in Cork in January pending his recovery.
