Burning of the Palace Steamer J M White at Pointe Coupee
New Orleans report describes the burning of the J M White, the largest steamer on the Lower Mississippi, at St. Maurice Pointe Coupee Landing around 11 PM. The cargo included 3,500 bales of cotton and 300 barrels of oil. Casualty estimates range from 36 to 50 with many deck passengers lost. The list of known dead includes Captain Flood and several named crew and passengers.

Hopkins Woman Granted Absolute Divorce in New York
A morning paper reports Mrs Amos Lawrence Hopkins has been granted an absolute divorce from her husband. Mrs Hopkins is the daughter of Chicago merchant George L Dunlap. Her husband is the son of Mark Hopkins, president of Kesey Col and second vice president of the Southern Pacific, and a trusted lieutenant of Jay Gould.
