A damaged fragment lists the Dela Plain farm as a 1 1/2 acre parcel known on the north side of Sixth Street near Montr eel. It notes a two and a half story brick house with several outbuildings and ongoing repairs as part of Waples homestead description in Madison County.
In Mississippis WiexsnenG Captas D W Pressell a wealthy and influential citizen was arrested for outraging Miss Julia Neilson a nine year old girl. After being held in the county jail a mob battered the door seized him and hanged him from a nearby oak around midnight. Pressell aged 65 was brother in law to Judge Gifford and this marked another lynching in Isaquena county in six weeks.
Washut InGTon August 3 reports a new Kansas Live Stock company syndicate aims to monopolize 3 to 4 million acres of grazing ground west of the Arkansas river within the Cheyenne and Arapaho Indian reservation. The five year lease pays 100000 dollars annually in cash and cattle. Secretary Joslyn declines approval, noting private contracts with Indians fall outside government duties and legality is uncertain though the plan could benefit the Indians long term.
Wabash and Chicago and Alton railways agree to sell tickets between St Louis and Chicago at reduced fares a cut of 176 dollars. The move follows widespread scalping of Illinois Central and Chicago and Alton tickets and signals a potential rate war as rivals match the discount. Vandalia is billed as not part of the deal, while freight lines threaten retaliation and new agency moves unfold on the lake trade.
Telegram from Detective Wash Hood reports one killed and two wounded in the August 1 encounter near Ix Camp Montgomery County. The posse arrived with bloodhounds and plans a new start, as the outlaws are believed still in the area.

In Montcomery Missouri on August 3 a scaffold at John Best’s residence gave way. Workers Joseph Smith and Irving Pace fell twenty two feet. Smith suffered three broken ribs while Pace dislocated an arm. Both were severely bruised.

A 19 year old boy sleeping in a seat aboard No 12 the New York express was awakened by a passenger and fell from the moving train near Pana Eight miles from the station. He sustained a severe cut above the left eye and head wounds but his skull was not fractured. He was found unconscious beside the track and rushed to Harrison House for treatment.

He claims the test jump near Goat Island descended steadily like an elevator and landed safely.
A brakeman on the Missouri Pacific extension died after being crushed between cars near Baker Illinois. His wife resides in Vincennes Indiana and he recently joined the Ancient Order of United Workmen with a $2000 policy. In Matroos Illinois a youth attempting to board a through freight train lost a leg which was amputated but he died. He gave the name Albert Smith and said his father lived in Dubuque Iowa. In Danville Illinois Joseph Carter train car inspector for C E I was crushed to death in the yard. He was about 40, leaves a wife and four children.
In Parsons Kansas on August 27 temperance groups announce a union encampment to discuss prohibition and license policies. Leaders for high licenses include Rev Crosby Governor Crittenden Governor Glick and others while Governor St John Rev A B Campbell Hon M W B Bennett and others advocate prohibition. The event will last several days with two thousand army tents secured and railroads offering special rates.
August 8 at Booxvie Missouri reports the Grand Lodge A F and A M of Missouri held a large assembly to witness the Canterbury Chapel corner-stone laying. Grand Master C Woods of Kansas City presided, escorted by Knights Templar Fayette commandery No. 3. Eminent Commander Sloan led the escort. speakers included Cary Pritchett Glasgow E R Hendrix Fayette and C Woods. Peace and harmony reported.
The contract for stair-raising at the St. Louis custom house was let to Joseph Thomas & Son of Baltimore for about $1200. One lower bidder withdrew his bid due to an error. The St Louis Collector of Internal Revenue urged the Treasury Supervising Architect to complete the new building rooms promptly as current quarters are cramped and unsuitable.
Early on August 8 in Carmo Illinois the decks of the steamers Success and Elliott at the Mississippi levee were covered with small green frogs about an inch long after a drenching rain. Spars lines and fences were alive with the slimy creatures. The event, observed by night watchmen, remains unexplained and has drawn much comment.
Curcaco August 3. Chain closed last night nearly the same as Wednesday with a slight drop. Day markets were down on Boston news and local events, but a late recovery appeared. Rumors of a Boston bank failure, wheat and ern slipped a half cent, provisions weak, packer pit bearish on grain trades.
August 3 report from Pana Illinois says Winfield Abrell Eck Abrell and Holt Coburn were fired and agreed to close their liquor business for selling liquor without a license. The same town block faced two additional sellers who remain to be dealt with, ending the case.

Reid says he never discussed or sought the post, learned of Matthews’s selection only after Senate rejection, and rejects the Dorsey story. George Jones of the New York Times also calls the Dorsey claim untrue.
