The Avalanche urges readers not to reveal secrets about last weeks Want Ad while defending its legitimacy. It jokes about inquiries into ads and pictures, then celebrates a rating of the Pecos Enterprise as one of America’s best weekly papers.
A post office will open at Big Bend National Park on October 11 with Jack Lewis serving as postmaster. The office will be in the park office building, replacing the snack bar area, and mail will be carried by the Baygent bus line twice weekly via Terlingua and Marathon.
Work completed on an office building at 501 B Ave. Mrs Williams moved her office from the Hard building to the new location last week, announced this week.

Recruit Robert Texas of Fort Davis has arrived at Fort Hood and signed to a combat unit of the 2d Armored Division for basic training. He attended Fort Davis High School, played basketball and football, and worked for Jack Dickson, distributor for Prices Creameries, before entering the Army.
Alpine plans a complete religious census Sunday afternoon October 8. The Alpine Ministerial Alliance sponsors the drive with church workers assigned to city sections and meeting at the Methodist church for lunch before canvassing. Residents are urged to stay home until an enumerator calls, and those who wish to desist may contact their pastor. Participating churches include Baptist Catholic Church of Christ Episcopal Christian Methodist Nazarene and Presbyterian.
Forty two people attended a Baptist Brotherhood associational meeting at the local church Monday night after a barbecue supper in the basement. Rev H W Croft of Marathon delivered the principal sermon, with visitors from Marfa Fort Davis and Presidio.
Allen K Killough and Miss Gloria Farley of Brewster County Production Marketing attended a district meeting in Fort Stockton where the 1951 program was discussed. Miss Emilita Brown returned Monday from an extended tour in Europe.
Sul Ross Lobos head to a non conference clash with Daniel Baker College in Brownwood after a 34 to 0 loss at Abilene Christian. Coach Paul E Pierce reshuffles backs while aiming to avenge past wins over Brownwood foe Hill Billies and honor late Coach Paul Tyson.
Waco reporter notes Ralph Burleson, a Baylor University law student from Alpine, recently passed the state bar exam. Dean Abner V. McCall announced the results, with Henry J. Steinlek releasing the official list of those who passed.
Aubrey Tims of Alpine was seriously injured last Friday night when his truck left the highway crossed a borrow pit and crashed through a fence on Highway 67 about 20 miles north of Alpine. He suffered a broken shoulder and neck injuries and was taken to a hospital by a Livingston ambulance.
The Alpine Garden Club postpones its annual dahlias show to October 11 at the Alpine Public Library building from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. This non competitive exhibit invites residents to display dahlias damaged by hail and rain. entries due before 11 a.m. on show day. Edward Rider of New York City arrived to visit relatives including Mrs. Rider and Mrs. George A. Brown.
Pvt Richard J Slight 22 son of Mr and Mrs Slight of Alpine started basic training at Lackland AFB San Antonio Texas known as The Gateway to the Air Force He will undergo indoctrination and vocational testing before assignment to a technical specialty He completed basic training yesterday and departed for Scott Field Illinois for further duties at headquarters in scientific research
Final completion of road work to Rim Grove cemetery was announced last weekend. The base had been laid for months and topping completed recently. Lee Smith oversaw the project with I H C Hernandez commissioner Prec 2 and Alpine sharing roughly $2500 for the topping. C D Burleson of Alpine was the contractor. Grady Nance and son sued Mr Nance's parents in Downwood last week.
Alpine High School's Bucks claimed a 6-0 victory over the Ozona Lions in the first game of the 1950 season on a rain soaked field. Alpine outgained Ozona 255 to 51 rushing yards and 15 to 5 in first downs, with a key 20 yard pass completing and no interceptions. The crowd endured a flooded field, one water burst on a hydrant and minor light tower damage as fans cheered the Bucks who wore white with gold piping for the season.
Rain across the Big Bend and Davis Mountains brings the yearly total to 16.44 inches with Alpine reporting up to five inches since rain began. Localized moisture since Sept 14 pushes totals in Alpine to 2.80 inches for the month and 3.01, while the year surpasses 1949 despite a slower September. Ranchers call this growing weather, hoping for continued warm spells.
The Methodist church begins a loyalty attendance drive from Oct 1 toward Christmas. Members receive attendance cards and a perfect streak earns a special award after attending at least one service weekly for 14 Sundays. Mr Johnny Prude leads hymn Sing and solo performances feature violin, organ, piano, and guitar choirs. Attendees invited to bring favorite hymns and join in.
Alpine officials report city wells produced 184,980,600 gallons in the past year ending Aug 31. Daily average was 513,800 gallons, with peak use in May and June. A test of the Melnyre ranch well is planned, with anticipated cost 200,000 to 250,000 to run a seven mile pipeline.
