Unity theme marks Texas party conventions across state
The Texas Democratic and Republican conventions pledged unity for the November 5 election. Democrats in Austin backed Lt. Gov. Preston Smith for governor, endorsed a 16 point platform, and heard Lyndon Johnson’s telegram backing Humphrey. Republicans in Fort Worth rallied behind Nixon and Agnew, with Peter O’Donnell Jr. leading the GOP, while George Wallace supporters backed Wallace at the Dallas American Party convention. New colleges and an upper division plan were approved by the Coordinating Board, Texas College and University System, alongside a proposed state dental school.
