Registration for the fall term at Sul Ross college hints at enrollment levels equal to last year despite a softer regional outlook. Over 200 were on campus Wednesday with remaining arrivals expected next week, while the sub-college adds seven to reach 124 for the opening week.
A large crowd attended the Rainbow for Girls installation at Masonic Hall on Monday night. Juliette Forchheimer was installed as worthy advisor, with bouquets presented to her and Mrs. C. A. Brown. New officers include Elizabeth Behrens, Anna Dee Phelps, Audrey Lewis, Kathryn Hudman, and others in roles such as drill leader and chaplain.
City Federation will meet Tuesday at the Methodist church instead of the regular fourth Monday. Mrs. W. Van Sickle notes the postponement of the P. T. A. meeting last week altered the schedule and brought the federation into alignment with the postponed event.
Clyde Buttrill, Hovey area rancher, collected two 45-60 rim fire cartridges along the old El Paso to San Antonio route. The era dates back about seventy years, when U S troops guarded against raids. He plans to donate the shells to Everett Townsend’s private museum in south Alpine.

Homer W. Ferguson, killed by a Southern Pacific passenger train west of Alpine, honored in a large funeral at the Pir Chile tian church with Rev Bridges presiding. Officers for the ensuing year were chosen at the Big Bend post of the American Legion. Dell Duncan was named post commander with Evan J. Wood as vice commander, M. L. Hopson adjutant, Morris Metofsky sergeant at arms, and Felix Garrett chaplain. An executive committee includes Harry V. Fisher, Lucas Herrera, and George Pugh. Installation scheduled for October 2.
Over one hundred Alpine Mexicans are hired in Texas cotton fields with labor from Alpine relief groups aiding Bronte Ballinger and Alpine. About 150 have already left, with estimates up to 280 by season end. Wages run fifty cents per hundred pounds, experienced pickers earning around two dollars daily. The movement involves U S Agriculture quarantine and immigration services, aiding families through winter and affecting local schools.
The Alpine High School Bucks were beaten by Del Rio Wildcats 13 to 0 in Del Rio, then lost 7 to 6 at Marfa on Tuesday. The Bucks played strong defense but struggled offensively, facing a larger Del Rio lineup and late turnover costs in the second game.
Alpine plans an annual revival starting next Sunday with eight days of services as ministers and the local political group approved. The Mountain scenic drive project in Fort Davis moves forward with a $50,000 state highway department authorization and Jeff Davis chamber of commerce reports. Convict labor will not be used.

The Sig Bend Post of the American Legion was the seventy ninth post to be organized in the United States. Chartered in 1919 with thirty two charter members, it began under a temporary New York charter and has remained active since. Twelve years after its first meetings, six of the original members are dead and eight of the remaining twenty six remain in the present organization. The original charter members list includes Morgan Terry J H Blevins Hayes Hord H W McSpadden J R Middlebrook and others.
The Alpine Lions Club and local music lovers will meet Tuesday at 7 30 pm with the army band advance agent to arrange the October 16 appearance. Pershing's Own, praised as the second best military band, includes top musicians selected through strict tests. Special sections and reserved seating for Fort DA Russell personnel, Sul Ross students, and veterans are planned, with J W Frazer coordinating reservations.
A general meeting in the interests of the coming Highland fate is called for tomorrow at 1 30 at the Community house in Marta by JW Merrill president of the Highland Hereford Breeders association. Committees have worked hard but knotty problems remain to be solved by the three interties before the fair. Merrill warns the cattle industry watches the sale and failure could hurt prices. He urges all interested to attend and support the fair and feeder sale to maintain high cattle prices. Mie Leith Chaffin returns from California after vacation seeking her sister in Los Angeles.
