A letter from Lieut George McCadden shows Texas Big Bend pride and California moves. Brews ter readers note 193 readers already honored, with many servicemen listed by name and base, plus a call to back the 3rd War Loan Drive.
The annual FFA sweetheart contest to pick the most popular high school girl ends Monday at noon. Four classes chose their favorites and each vote costs one cent. Proceeds fund Alpine FFA activities. the winner receives an FFA sweater and honors as Alpine FFA Sweetheart for 1943 1044. Candidates are Miss Carolyn Carrithurs freshman Miss Jerry Mis junior Miss Barbara McDougel and Miss Starn is senior.
Reverend R L Witiner of the Baptist church presented the film America Can to pupils and faculty at Central School. The moving picture aimed to inspire and educate, and the school expresses sincere thanks for this timely effort.
State highway engineer D C Greer and commission member Fred Knetach met Monday with Alpine chamber of commerce and county officials to discuss highway matters. The party, en route to El Paso, then Midland for county judges' convention, included Chee Simons of the Texas Good Roads Assn and State Senator H La Winfield of Ft. Stockton.
In Alpine Sul Ross College promotes postwar training and leisure courses for men and women including typewriting, shorthand, secretarial practice, accounting, teacher training, language, science, and economics. Over 130 courses offered this term with small classes and individual attention from faculty, open to adults over 21 who have not graduated high school.
Rev M A Buhler will return to Alpine to lead the First Christian Church as pastor starting Oct 3 at regular services. He previously led Alpine for two years after stints in Marfa and Del Rio. the Buhler family is moving from Del Rio to join him, with Mrs Buhler and Dorothy already in Alpine.
Former actor Robert Sterling, born William J Hart, obtained a court order to make his screen name his legal name. The change follows a hurried incident in Hollywood as a rugged juvenile cadet at a pilot school near Marfa and Alpine. Sterling has starred in class A films including Somewhere I’ll Find You Johnny Eager and Two-Faced Woman. he is married to Ann Southern known as Maisie in a film series.
Overcast skies and intermittent drizzle fell Wednesday and Thursday across far West Texas, providing only dust settling moisture so far. Ranchers expect more rain within 10 days to ease a regionwide drought, with Presidio and Fort Davis reporting measurable rain yesterday. Fall weather has prevailed since early last week.

The Cemetery association pleads for water conservation due to scarce rain and broken engine. Sexton Dragoo and secretary Mrs Pallman urge owners not to waste water by leaving taps running overnight or touching pipes. If not stopped, a lock valve will cut off water when the sexton leaves. Communicate concerns to Mrs Pallman.
Mrs Fr Wawer writes from Del Rio about a colony of former Alpine residents. She notes teachers Wilma Mills Imogene Young and Sul Ross students among locals. Mr and Mrs Forrest S100 run a coffee shop at the Roswell hotel. Dru Wood, former Alpine boy, is superintendent here and Harold Thomas is popular band director.
Two aviation cadets attached to the pilot school bailed out over the foothills nine miles north of Alpine at 2 18 Tuesday when the engine failed at 7000 feet. Cadet Frank F Toftness injured his ankle and Cadet Wayne B Tweten was uninjured.
Lieut Lankford son of Mr and Mrs T M Lankford of this city is home on a five day leave after ten months service as a B 25 bomber pilot in the Aleutians. He rested three weeks at a camp before coming home and had a strenuous tour in the Aleutian theater. Brewster county shows hesitancy in Third War Loan drives with only about 40 percent of its 299000 county quota sold. Alpine reports about 15108 000 in sales while Marathon has not reported. State totals indicate roughly 45 percent state wide and Brews ter county faces difficulty meeting its share before the drive ends October 2.
Fragmentary OCR notes place Lt Rafshoon as Provost Marshal at a pilot school with references to New York harbor, Miami, and a period of service including a two month gap. Names and details are unclear, but the core fact is his role as provost marshal at a training facility.
A core fire was averted Monday night near Willan and Vogt grocery on Nort Birth street at 10 30 observed by Zoe fools on coins near the heated meat display. Reports say the smoke and smell prompted an alert and prompt action by nearby responders.
A Texas law effective October 1 voids all records of brands and marks. The current owner has a two year preference to re record. failure allows others to register and claim ownership. Awards were given to Girl Scouts and a tea followed in home economics rooms. Reporter Mrs W D McCall planned to leave Sunday for Dallas to fetch Earl after his leg operation.
