Over the Trans-Pecos Inland Frontier and Apache Conflicts

In the Big Bend region along the Rio Pecos a rugged landscape hosts 181 peaks over 4,000 feet and El Capitan the highest peak outside the Rockies. The Mescalero and Gila Apache tribes resisted White movement as Fort Davis and nearby posts launched campaigns to push them back. Civil War divides and shifting forts altered traffic on the overland trails, with frontier skirmishes and strategic patrols shaping the frontier until the war closed. Fort Davis remained a focal point as Manuel Musquiz built a grand canyon home and the story continues next week.
