Range Pow-Wow By CAL EDWARDS
In August 1896, the San Angelo Standard noted bears near Alpine in Brewster County and the western spirit still felt in the area. Dr. Ross Maxwell and I visited Fort Davis for air and scenery, plucked apples, found top tasting Bird orchard fruit, and saw green grass and fat stock everywhere. The Marfa fishing lake dried up, diversions dammed rainwater, soil conservation concerns lingered, and ocotilla fences bloomed with red flowers. Chihuahua players Louis Garcia and Manuel Ramirez of Cruz Blanca joined the Internationals in Alpine.

Meat shortages loom as packing plants cut operations
The nation faces a real meat shortage as packing plants close or curb slaughter. Livestock receipts remain light under OPA controls with cattle at markets far below year ago levels. Reports from Los Angeles show under 3000 cattle, prices range from 13 to 20 dollars for various grades. Two Alpine Boys, Shorty and Lou, assisted by guiding visitors in the city, are thanked.

Veterans surplus program aids outlying counties
The War Assets Administration announces streamlined purchase access for World War II veterans. Field crews will travel to distant county seats to explain the surplus property act and certify eligibility on the spot, reducing trips from employment. A fall schedule will hold court at Alpine and nearby towns with officials detailing set aside provisions and on-the-spot certification.
