Glimpses of the Texas Rockies in Pecos country rattlers

A Mountain Peaks column recounts Pecos county rattlesnakes near Fort Stockton and McCamey. Bill Birley, local Sunset agent, has killed 95 snakes in four months along a two mile stretch called Rattlesnake Draw. Snakes cluster on the southeast side of the highway, especially near culverts, with a granddaddy specimen over eight feet long. A pistol behind the head usually ends the threat. The note also links Highway 290-67 and asphalt paving to snake migration patterns and reports highway workers encounter many snakes in the valley.
