Alpine Schools Near 1000 Registration as Deegregation Begins

Nearly 1000 students enrolled across Alpine public schools this week marking the start of the first term with de segregated teaching. Centennial tallied 459, Central 333, and Alpine High 204 as Freshman Week began with activities and a student dance planned for tomorrow. Seventynine students were pre registered and the faculty report shows strong Texas State Teachers Association membership.

Indians Open District Six-Man Schedule at Clint

Fort Davis High School Indians travel to Clint to begin District 5 six-man football under new coach Al White from the University of Oklahoma. Seven of 12 players are freshmen. Last season they won three and lost five. Schedule lists Sept 9 Clint, Sept 16 Sierra Blanca, Sept 24 Dell City, Sept 30 Toyah, Oct 7 Pyote, Oct 14 Marathon, Oct 21 Balmorhea, Oct 28 Buena Vista, Nov 11 Barstow with road and home games noted.

Gulf Will Drill Marathon Test Near Marathon

Gulf plans a 9300 foot wildcat drill one mile southeast of Marathon. No. 1 David Combs and crew will spud the test at section 16 block 4 SC and SF survey. Projected 9500 foot reach aims to strike granite. Miss Myra Nell Hord returns from Fort Worth to enroll at Sul Ross College dormitory.

Emmett Meeks 72 Dies After Illness in Marathon

Funeral services were held Saturday in Marathon Baptist Church for Emmett Meeks 72 who died Thursday September 1 after years of illness. Rev. George Thomason and Rev. Jack Tones officiated with burial in Marathon Cemetery. Meeks born October 26 1881 in Erath County came to Marathon in 1901. He married Eula Martin in 1907 and leaves a wife two sons Cecil and W M Meeks two daughters Mrs Earl Mitchell and Mrs C A Maddox.

Alpinian Celebrates 80th Birthday With First Air Ride

Mrs A Mosley marked her husband Mr Mosley’s 80th birthday by taking a first airplane ride over Alpine in a four place Stinson owned by their son Wayne Mosley of Albuquerque. The party Friday September 2 included family from Las Cruces Amarillo Stephenville and Albuquerque with several grandchildren and guests.

Alpine Bucks Prep Tough for Marfa Game After Van Horn Win

Alpine High School Bucks crushed Van Horn 43 7 last Friday night and continue hard practice for the Marfa showdown on September 28. Coach Curtiss Kelley praised the line blocking and downfield execution while noting needed improvements in pass defense. The victory featured scoring by Freddie Davis Phil McGaughy Don Burgess Manuel Espinosa and Alan Turner with Burgess returning a 74 yard interception for a TD. Willie Valenzuela left the game shaken but no serious injuries were reported.

Former Alpine resident J. Parker of Sonora Mexico won the event with a 3 and 3 victory. Victor Hellinghausen defeated Kay Laff 3 and 2 for first flight. Legion Auxiliary to Host Bingo Night for Texas President Bid

The American Legion Auxiliary plans a bingo party on Saturday September 17 at 8 pm in the Legion Home. Tickets are 50 cents for all-night play with sandwiches and drinks sold onsite. North Alpine Rezoned For New SCS Building

City commissioners approved the rezoning at North Alpine near the Highway Department for the Big Bend Soil Conservation District building. A hearing was held last Saturday, and bids for the new structure at about $20,000 will be opened Monday.

Riess Water Test Drilling Resumes at Alpine

City of Alpine resumed drilling on the Riess water well test on Kokernot Hill near 1600 feet. Driller Paul Gooden said the water in the hole stood at 820 feet when operations resumed after cleaning and tool recovery. The test had bottomed at 1537 feet with 1540 reached Tuesday afternoon. New cable installed Wednesday.

Sul Ross Sees 10 Percent Enrollment Jump for 35th Session

Sul Ross State College in Alpine expects a 10 percent rise in enrollment for the 35th session starting Monday September 12. Students will come from Texas and as far as New Jersey and South Dakota. Upperclassmen register Tuesday freshmen Wednesday as new faculty members join the campus.

Fort Davis plans an Old Fort Davis celebration on October 8 and 9. The event grows from last year’s centennial observance by the Fort Davis Historical Society. Highlights include Apache dances and a buffalo meat barbecue with a buffalo yearling donation from Reynolds Ranch.

Travel in Park Up 21 Percent

August visitors to Big Bend National Park totaled 12,456 people across 3,039 automobiles, a 31 percent rise from August 1951. Year to date travel shows 10,120 people in 14,342 cars, marking a 20 percent increase overall.
