In a letter to the editor, Dr. W. E. Lockhart commends Mrs. Oscar Roberts for enabling Alpine to avoid water rationing by providing land for pumping. He recalls the Roberts Contract as a model for future water rights agreements and notes her wish that the city obtain its water from her land.
Howard L. Orem notes a rise in insecticide use after sleeping sickness scares. He warns some products, especially organic phosphates and chlorinated hydrocarbons, can injure or kill if misused. He recalls eradicating mosquitoes by removing habitats and stagnant water.
The McCasland family thanks Alpine for the pleasant climate and library staff. They cite the library as adding to their summers at Sul Ros and express appreciation to Mrs. Newell, Mrs. Justice, and other staff for friendly help during their visits.
Lykes Bros Steamship Co has contracted to buy the 02 Ranch covering about 270000 acres south of Alpine in Brewster and Presidio Counties from Aetna Life Insurance Co. In Alpine, R L Witter will begin pastorship at Alpine Baptist Church on Sept 14. Le C Brite, longtime Presidio County rancher and philanthropist, died after an appendicitis operation. Alpine Public Schools shift to 12 grade system, with high school moved to Sul Ross College facilities. The Big Bend Park Association signals rapid tourist development with land purchase efforts led by Frank D. Quinn. Sul Ross College expands animal husbandry with A J Bierschwab as head. W E Williams becomes vocational ag supervisor. About 125 Texas Defense Guard members mobilized for field maneuvers near Alpine.
Mr. and Mrs. Peyton Cain visited relatives in Eldorado and San Angelo this week. Miss Lutie Britt retired Monday after a two week visit in New Mexico. Several couples toured Pecos County ranch areas and El Paso, Dallas, Fort Worth, and San Antonio as part of visits. Residents new and moving include the Rowland Martins Shelys and others on area ranches. Tommy Henderson now manages Central Power and Light Co. in town.
Letters Testamentary granted August 15 1964 in Brewster County Texas Cause 911 to Thad W Corkins and Robert K Corkins Alpine Texas as independent executors and trustees. Creditors must present claims within legal time.
Alpine Avalanche established 1890 in Alpine Texas. This notice lists staff editors and offices including James W. Glasscock as editor and Mrs Jean Glasscock as publisher.
