Sul Ross Bar SR Bar Rodeo Club grows since 1947
The Sul Ross State college Bar SR Bar Rodeo Assn formed on campus in spring 1947 and has grown into one of the largest clubs. Interest from ranch youth nationwide increased as the group built a rugged arena funded by the college. The Bar SR Bar brand sits on a hill near the campus, symbolizing enduring loyalty. Since 1947 the association has competed in four national rodeos, securing four championships and notable wins, including a team championship at the Grand National Intercollegiate Rodeo in San Francisco in 1949.

The movement originated at Sul Ross State College in 1948 and grew after a Dallas meeting in 1949 assembling 21 colleges across six western states. Texas A&M’s Charlie Rankin led as acting president with plans for a Denver convention in 1950. Notables include Harley May, 1990 champions at Madison Square Garden, and several Sul Ross graduates pursuing rodeo careers.
