A PTA carnival with a 4 PM parade, decorates floats, diverse booths, sideshows, and a boxing contest is announced. Prizes for best costumes and floats, Punch and Judy, Madame Nazimova, and a freaks tent are billed, with warnings to spectators to stay away from the bull fight area.
Ce cil Smith and associates of North Texas sign a contract to develop the Old Bird mine holdings about 10 miles east of Alpine near the 8 P railroad. Owner Mrs J C Bird holds three patented claims totaling 63 acres once granted to the late J C Bird. Former assays ranged to 92 dollars per ton for ore of silver lead and zinc, with development limited so far. A crew and modern equipment will be brought in as development proceeds rapidly using power driven machinery. The mine lies on section 6 Gogh 300 0.0 28 F Ry.
Rotary Governor Guy Harrington of Santa Fe spoke to a large Alpine Club gathering on Individual and Practical Rotary. He outlined member qualifications and benefits, emphasized Ju lance as a core duty, and predicted attendance honors at the regional Albuquerque meeting. The club placed second at Carlsbad and will likely publish a weekly paper soon. Prominent guests included Royal Clyde Agi of the Red Cross and Mrs. C R Goodwin AR C general field rep.
A Davis Mountain Federation committee from local clubs met at Mr and Mrs L Brite home in Marfa to plan a November 13 scenic drive for delegates returning from the State Federation. The Southern Pacific offers stopover privileges and a special car to those taking the drive, with arrangements to sidetrack at Marfa and shuttle to Alpine.
The Methodist Church posts Sunday school at 9 45 led by superintendent Prof J C Yoleman. Morning sermon at 11 titled Make Choice. 3 pm Junior Epworth Society Epworth League with a sermon by the pastor R F Davis invites all.
National Red Cross representatives visited Alpine this week including Royal Clyde Agne from Cleveland Mia H Vaughan St Louis director of nursing Mid Western area Agnes Jacobsen field representative and Mrs C I Goodwin Alpine general field representative A regional conference was not held due to delegates’ inability to attend and Agne spoke to a large gathering.
Ors ham Barnett Alpine newly appointed license and tonnage inspector warns motorists about enforcing headlight taillight license plate and muffler rules. He will pursue violations with deputies and sheriff support to ensure compliance before arrests.
The State Board of Control appointed W. W. Jenkins of Alpine as storekeeper for the state Orphans home at Corsicana. He left last Thursday and has been checked into the position by the state auditor. Mrs. Jenkins will join him once their home disposition is settled.
Civil War veteran A. H. Uncle Allen Patier dies in Wichita Falls after a long life as a colorful regional figure. Reported by local friends and Alpine residents who knew him for years and treasured his memorable personality.
Drilling near Alpine for a new well on the Jackson and Harmon ranch at Strobelstraton seven miles east of here advances. J M Mickes reports hard driving but expects easier drilling ahead. well depth 80 feet yesterday. Nearby, Mid-Kansas Turney No 1 near Alpine at 4098 feet. Wilcor and Anderton Cage No 1 between Alpine and Marathon nearing significant depth as leases activity rises in the area.
Mrs Walter Garnett and others contract E J Wood this week to build a five room residence on Sixth Street adjacent lots. Hollow tile construction stuccoed estimates place cost around 2600 dollars. Completion of Scott Pugh and Berkeley buildings on Fifth Street is near. Pugh Brothers Tailors to occupy the Pugh building as Tailors to DeLuxe Cleaners. Hudsons Bakery Hurley Furniture Company to occupy Scott building. Witt Stack to open barber shop in Berkeley building. A bakery to open soon in south half of new Wilson building on Fifth Street. Sul Ross hosts the School of Mines on Jackson Field next Saturday November 5 in the Lobos first home game of the season. Coaches Graves and Stewart pride their squads as top contenders while Alpine and nearby towns anticipate a large turnout and a spirited welcome with the college band set to perform.
Telegraph reports from last night say Howard Payne Jackets defeated Sul Ross Lobos 33 to 7 in a lopsided game. The Lobos were hampered by injuries and several players were knocked out during Saturday’s action.
The Russian Cossack Chorus, 12 men led by Sergei Socoloff, will perform in Sul Ross college auditorium on Wednesday November 2 at 8 oclock. The program features ancient folk airs, Russian cavalry marches, and popular encores. Tickets are 1.60 for adults and .75 for students at the Kandy Kitchen.
Several Alpine chapter members left Sunday for Mineral Wells to attend the Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mesdames N. B. Murphy C. A. Brown J. C. Bird C. B. Cook and J. M. Benson joined the session Tuesday through Thursday and expected to return home Sunday.
Movement of cattle to Kansas City and Fort Worth markets has begun, with W. J MeIntyre & Son purchasing 1000 head of steel calves from the Diamond 4 ranch near Deming NM. The McIntyres sold 100 calves 1 pop yearlings and 400 two year olds to be delivered about the 6th of next month. Additional sales include two cars of cows to Jackson & Harmon and three cars of stocker heifers to H Oliphant of Wichita. About 60 loads head north for Alpine as Kokernot outfits prepare for northern markets.
