The Alpine committee bought a Boyer chemical engine with two 5-gallon tanks, a 25 gpm pump at 120 psi, a 20-foot extension ladder, lanterns, and extinguishers for a one-ton Ford truck. Total cost about 3450 dollars plus house for storage may raise to 4000. The plan funds via 0.5% assessment on city valuations. pledges are coming in and fire companies will be organized next.
The Rotary meeting featured Jim Casner discussing his path in auto sales from a one car demonstrator to Alpine dealer with Ford franchises. He credited Henry Ford and noted the vast auto industry, its need for roads, and his family business employing 35. L. T. Votan spoke on Magnolia gasoline share and 90 percent sales from dealers. Guests included Dr. C. L. Pope Hon. J. D. Jackson and H. W. Ferguson. America singing opened and Victrola music accompanied the hour.
Dallas, Oct. 19 Dr G A Works of Cornell University was chosen to direct a survey of all tax supported Texas schools under a Legislature act. A committee will set contract details and Dr Works will oversee statewide rural education surveys previously conducted in New York and Manitoba. He attends the Texas State Teachers Association convention in Fort Worth November 28 to 30.
J M Johnson operates the local pharmacy filling prescriptions with careful attention to protection and safety for customers in daily duties.
AUSTIN Texas Oct 22 The University of Texas announces the final list of 186 student assistants and tutors for 1923 24 with 87000 in salaries. Eugene R Smith of Alpine is named assistant in pure mathematics and is praised for his scholastic record and hard work.
Three Sul Ross State Teachers College faculty members appear on the Texas State Teachers Association program in Fort Worth from November 29 to December 1. President Morelock addresses the Teachers College Section on the role of colleges in preparing teachers. Anne Aynesworth reads a paper on teaching high school composition. Victor Smith presents a standard course of study for manual training and mechanical drawing to the Industrial Arts Section.
Wayne Cartledge reports 77 bales of cotton picked on his Santa Helena farm with good prospects for 100 more. Ginning may have started last Saturday. A sterilizer will protect seed from pink bollworm infestation. Lee H. Cox, state entomologist, arrives to study border cotton infestation and will stay two years. Mrs. Cox is hired as Santa Helena public school teacher.
Capt. J. B. Gillett of Marfa reports selling his cattle and leasing Barrel Springs Ranch to his son Milton for five years. He will be away from Marfa most of next year after six years with Company A Frontier Battalion Texas Rangers and author of a book Six Years With The Texas Rangers. A longtime Big Bend and Alpine citizen, he plans extensive travel next year.
The Girls Glee Club, directed by Miss Guenther, opens with twenty five experienced singers. The group promises delightful performances and credit is given for the first time in the institution's history.
Sul Ross announces English 39 a journalism course for the fall to teach newspaper writing. It aims at Skyline staff members and others seeking basic reporting and correspondence skills. The class meets weekly for nine months and carries three credits with significant lab work.
Fort Worth marks its Diamond Jubilee with a rebuilding of the old fort site by Boy Scouts from Nov 11 to 4. Events honor Armistice Day American Legion Day Navy 13 Mayor's Day and a Carnival styled Diamond Jubilee with church services and a memorial open-air service.
