The Animal Husbandry department at Sul Ross College thanks Jee and Matt Smith of Matt Smith's Market in Alpine and Buddy and Byron Wright for their cooperation. Groups judged Wrights' steel calves and market carcasses on marbling fat color meat fineness and carcass darkness. Two trips to the Wright home showcased five purebred Hereford calves aged five to eleven months with two standout markings. The Smith Market display included a streamlined ham likely to appeal to housewives. Wrights plan to show calves at the El Paso Fat Stock Show. The department emphasizes community support for its success.
