Clay Holland urged Alpine residents to curb speeding and parking violations at a Rotary luncheon. He argued juries often refuse to convict, officers hesitate to arrest, and urged a city officer and a corporation judge to ensure fair enforcement. Residents fear tragedy may force action if reforms are delayed.
Excellent progress reported on Turney No 103 ranch well 53 miles south of Alpine and Wilcox Anderson Gage No 1 east of Marathon. Mid Kansas Turney No 1 down 700 feet Wednesday night. Gage near Lennox eastern Brewster down 111 feet last night per Mr Anderson. Kimball at Titley Station spudded about 15 miles north of Alpine, no report yet. McIntyre well still closed.
There were to be about 500 head in the big shipment to Kansas City markets. The dull of the big shipments has not begun yet, however the stock outlet will begin shipping at about a train load per week before many more days. Other outfits have not begun shipping much but several roundups are now in progress, it was reported yesterday.
Mr and Mrs J C Coleman plan a modern stucco home at foot of College Hill in East Alpine, costing 7000 dollars. R B Sul Ross Cotten awarded the contract this week. A filing station and repair shop is being erected by Carl Thain and Alonso Hord on College Ave. A small frame stuccoed building by Dave Pearce and a garage by John Hoberson north of the city school are under construction. Eric J Williams is building a garage in West Alpine. A Sixth Street business building is planned but details are scarce.
The conference held in El Paso last week returned Rev. R. F. Davis to lead the local Methodist church for another year. Davis has completed two terms and is praised for upbuilding the church. Other appointments included Rev. N. L. Linebaugh as presiding elder, Rev. J. E. Fuller to Fort Stockton Alpine, Rev. C. H. Armstrong to Marathon and Sanderson, Rev. J. C. Jones to Marfa, and Rev. J. W. Chisholm moving to the Northwest Texas conference.
John Young Land Company of Alpine paid 150000 for the 15272 acre Loma Vista Ranch at Paisano Pass about 12 miles west of Alpine in Brewster and Presidio counties. The property fronts the Southern Pacific on the continental divide and will be stocked with full blood Hereford cows, joining the Highland Hereford Breeders Association.
J F Batey minister of the Church of Christ will start a series of meetings at the Court House Friday extending through next week. Batey is an able evangelist with a message of interest. Services each evening at 8 oclock and Sunday morning at 11 oclock. Come and be with us.
Rev J E Fuller and J A Koon of Fort Stockton purchase the Pine Hardware from KR Coffey. Fuller, former Stockton Methodist pastor, will stay active in ministry while moving his family. Coffey, owner of Alpine Hardware, will stay on briefly and keep Alpine as home. The new firm plans to operate in Stockton and Alpine, with changes announced Tuesday.
Sub-College Cubs defeated Marfa 18 0 in Alpine with three Alpine touchdowns in the first third and fourth quarters. Roberts led with plunges through center and long gains, while Skevington and Carter with Young kept play in Marfa territory. Knight and Treadwell starred on the line as Alpine dominated both sides of the ball.
JD Jackson reported to the Railroad Commission from Fort Worth after seeking a revision of freight rates on refined oil products. He noted past allowances during prior hardship, the rise of pipelines, and a likely rate reduction to help Orient compete, with some shipments routed via Alpine and nearby Gulf points.
Mrs. W. B. Hamilton, secretary and treasurer of the chamber of commerce, travels to Dallas for the Texas Women's Press Association meeting on the 17th and a Texas Commercial exhibit of Brewster County minerals at the Dallas Fair. The display, arranged with last year’s successful exhibit, drew much attention.
A new bakery and confectionery outfit is being unloaded in the south half of the Wilson building on Fifth Street. It is expected to open within 15 days with K. G. Hardgrave as manager, assisted by E. A. Seamon who will oversee the baking end of the operation.
In a tense period the ball shifted between Alpine and Marfa with yardage plays and first downs. Alpine recovered a Marfa fumble after strong defensive play by both teams and the Sub-College regrouped at halftime under Coach Coan, aiming to resume a fierce third quarter.
A local PTA plans a large carnival to support school activities. The message mentions a teachers association and aims to draw attendees with food and entertainment. Details are unclear due to OCR errors, but the event is positioned as a community fundraiser with family activities and refreshments.
T. B. Clemens, wanted for the theft of a car belonging to Hew Taylor in Marathon, was a stranger in town when the crime occurred. The sheriff reported the vehicle was abandoned at Fort Stockton with instructions to notify Taylor. Telegrams were sent nationwide and Clemens was captured at Ranger a few days later.
George L. Cierry a prominent national figure and former candidate for vice president visited Alpine this week from Pressman Home Tennessee. He praised Highland country for its fine cattle and excellent range while touring the Highland ranching area after a WWI emissary role and leadership in the American Legion.
Lobos meet New Mexico A. & M. tomorrow in Las Cruces for the annual game. Despite injuries, the Lobos show pepper and clocklike precision in scrimmage as Graves’s new style is better adopted. Alpine fans travel to support the team, with several offering transport.
Visitors report Orient Gap narrows toward the border as rail work advances. Rails reach 35 miles from Presidio and two miles beyond Las Novienge with grading by Hudman and Moorman of Alpine, eyeing completion in weeks. Dittman Scott Dupuy prepare camps near the Rio Grande as a bridge project gains migration department approval and Presidio entry plans move forward. Al Hunter of Dallas praises local scenery and ranching life, seeking a move to the area.
