Sending Mail By Freight The Post Office Experiment
The port office department begins transporting heavy mail by freight starting this month to move magazines early and reduce costs. Some weeklies already use freight, finding it cheaper than the one cent per pound postal rate. If freight proves practical it could curb excess mail costs while preserving second class rates for eligible publications. Authorities argue for tighter second class eligibility to prevent misuse of the low rate.

Ancient carreta over two centuries in Los Angeles exhibit
A long history surrounds the ancient carreta in the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce exhibit room. The horse drawn wagon, attributed to Alfonso a Tesuque Indian, is said to be over 200 years old and was paroled by Captain Newton Chittenden during a journey from Redlands to Los Angeles in 1896. The cart, with wheels of sycamore and a cotton wood body, was hauled in and preserved for possible display for generations more.
