Everett Townsend attacks government waste and a poor printing office, while artist Floyd Walser writes from Boston about Texas bighorns and postwar hopes. The Alpine region now hosts hundreds of antelopes within 15 miles, with several hundred roaming the area and transplanted populations thriving.
A report details John Q. Henry's involvement in a flying school sub depot scheme at a West Texas site. It traces his connections to Sul Ross State College in Alpine during 1936 37 and notes his efforts to secure dormitory housing by wiring faculty, with deposits from Mission friends to guarantee living space. his wife joined him this week.

An advisory committee urged homeowners to report vacancies promptly to help civilian and military personnel find housing as newcomers arrive. Residents are asked to keep offices updated to avoid wasted time and disappointment.
The first shipment of twin engine training planes arrived this week at the advanced fly field. The AT ITB type, built by Cessna Aircraft of Wichita, is three place and designed for training personnel of twin engine war planes. More planes will be received later at the new flying school.
Alpine and Marfa residents are urged to donate books to the post library of the Advanced Flying school. Collection points include the Marfa chamber of commerce and Big Bend Sentinel offices, and in Alpine at Sul Ross College and local chamber and Avalanche offices. Lt. Armbruster outlined the system with community leaders and noted a paid librarian will supervise distribution under Lt. Barry.
Following three day registration Brewster county auto owners prepare for gasoline rationing set to start Tuesday. Coffee rationing begins Monday with coupon 27 in the sugar book good for one pound per person over 14 for five weeks. Coffee sale prohibited this week in prep for rationing program.
The Presbyterian church was filled yesterday at eight o'clock for a union Thanksgiving service with all Alpine churches taking part. Rev. E. B. Isaacks of the Christian church preached on Make Thanksgiving a Habit, as Rev. Ray McGrew of the Methodist church and Pastor's association led the proceedings.
Fire Chief J C Cooley urges residents to observe simple rules to help volunteers respond quickly. Do not telephone the location during a fire alarm. Notify the department before burning grass. Avoid letting strangers recharge fire extinguishers. return them to the fire department for safe recharge.
The First Baptist church surpassed its 400 dollar quota in the Victory Debt-Paying drive, with pastor R L Wittner noting early successes. Dr W W Melton reported total contributions for 1941-42 at 1,436,708.78, $421,000 over last year, and Texas Baptists paid all but 75,420.77 of the 400,000 debt. Volunteer pledges of 13,861 were added in 15 minutes at the Fort Worth convention, with the remaining 61,550.77 funded in the new 1,300,000 budget for 1942-43. The report also notes U S crude petroleum production in the Far East under Japanese control is roughly equal to one day’s U S output.
The Alpine area reports a cold snap with a norther driving temperatures below freezing. Observers noted ice on Sunday and Monday, followed by milder conditions midweek before another cold wave late Wednesday into Thursday morning.
Dr J B Roberts is named Professor of Education at Sul Ross State College succeeding the late R J Ratliff He and his wife arrived in Alpine and are residing in the apartment of Miss Irma Lee Batey Roberts holds a Ph D from George Peabody College and has degrees from North Texas State Teachers College Also Mrs Fredonia Sikes joins the faculty and Francis O Seymour of Rome Ga will arrive December 1 to become superintendent of buildings and grounds
Wartime pressure forces earlier mailing to assure on time deliveries. Postmaster General staff say bulk mail must be at post offices by December 1 as rail and air networks cannot handle usual December volumes. Shortage of vehicles and army use of trucks. veterans face holiday rush. many new hires slow handling of parcels and cards. Mail timely by December 1 to avoid disappointment.
A telegram from Donald M. Nelson of the War Production Board urges farmers to dedicate the remaining weeks of 1942 to an intensified scrap hunt. He notes steel mills need heavy scrap and farms are a prime source. Salvage committees will maintain farmer transportation and cooperation, with newspapers asked to keep rallying support for the drive through year end.
Civilian employees for the Marfa Army Air Forces Advanced Flying School sub depot have begun arriving from Moore Field Mission Texas after special training. Early arrivals include John Q. Henry sub-depot chief clerk Henry J. McBride and others such as Andrew J. Davis Ruth Kuk Elaine Deering Jane Riley Irene Gardner Flora Handy and Anna Belle Rush. More trained workers arrive daily, says Capt. Homer Handy the commanding officer.
Dr. W. W. Jackson, Trinity University vice president and former University of San Antonio president, will speak at Alpine's morning Presbyterian service. A noted Rotary leader, he led the San Antonio Rotary and represented it at Rotary International in Toronto. Trinity moved its campus from Waco to San Antonio last summer, occupying former San Antonio University buildings.
Funeral services were held for Lucille Gallego a 14 year old Alpine Latin American daughter of John Gallego and wife. She died in Big Spring from a heart attack while visiting. Survivors include seven brothers and five sisters and two brothers in the U S armed forces. Chiang Kai-shek once worked as a broker in Shanghai.
