Oranges Thrive in Brewster County Longstanding Fresno Canyon Tree Bears Fruit
An old Fresno Canyon orange tree in southern Brewster County continues to bear despite years of neglect. Planted around 1918 by James L. Crawford Sr. near the Rio Grande, the orchard produced large navels and fresh sprouts after the parent tree died back. The Crawford family ties link Alpine and Phoenix, Arizona, with ranching history noted by Harris Smith and a 1936 Alpine Avalanche remark on a 12 inch circumference orange.
