Bucks End Season With Narrow Loss To Pecos Eagles
In Pecos on Rotary Field the Pecos Eagles beat the Alpine Bucks 20-13 as the game stayed close. Jimmy Matlock saw a long first quarter return nullified, Bill Kelly connected with Joe Langham for a 25 yard touchdown, and Vichy Hernandez broke through for a late Buck score to pull within one. Fidel Cano’s kick attempt failed after the Bucks reached the Eagles nine yard line, keeping Pecos ahead 14-13.

Mrs Mack Brown Dies After Long Illness In Alpine
Mrs. Sue Brown aged 60 died Sunday afternoon at her home on East College Avenue after a prolonged illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Church of Christ with R B Wood Louis Wright and W S Boyd officiating. Interment followed at Elm Grove cemetery. Survivors include husband M K Brown three sons Raymond Hollis Randolph a daughter Mrs F W Stockslager four brothers and four sisters and four grandchildren.

Alpine approves Southwestern Bell rate increase to 1955 level
The Alpine city commission, after delaying since November, approved a rate increase for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. to take effect April 26, 1955, subject to company approval. The proposal cuts business extensions from two dollars to one fifty and residence extensions from one twenty five to one, and applies to Marfa and Fort Stockton towns.

Burglars Break In Alpine Store Local Job Suspected
The Forchheimer store was burglarized Monday night with about $100 cash and some merchandise taken. Entry was gained by removing a rear window bar and breaking a glass. Sheriff Jim Skinner calls the burglary a local job.

International Park Talk Set With Texan Leaders
Twenty four prominent Texas industrial and civic figures were named directors of a new organization to plan Big Bend National Park projects for 1954-55. About 600 students from Sul Ross Lobo band and 10 high school bands march 1:15 pm Saturday in Alpine. Parade forms at West Holland Ave and 7th Street, proceeds east to Cockrell Street, then disbands. Massed bands perform at a 2 pm Sul Ross Lamar Tech football game. Joe Jamar, Lobo band director, directs the massed bands. Citizens urged to attend.

Former Alpine Boy Killed in Highway Accident
William Robert Fruge 20 formerly of Alpine and a Junction resident died in a 15 mile northwest Kerrville crash Saturday. Arlie O Bryant 22 of Kerrville also died. May Estes Haney 23 of Mountain Home driver of the other car died, with her four year old daughter seriously injured. Funeral services were held in Junction with burial at Junction cemetery. Bill Fruge was a Southwest Texas State College student returning from San Marcos.

A Texas group led by Big Bend National Park officials will meet Mexico's minister of governmental affairs in Mexico City during Thanksgiving to discuss creating a Mexican counterpart to Big Bend National Park. Former Alpine Resident Stuart Johnson Dies in Cleburne
Word has been received of the death of Stuart Johnson former Alpine resident at Cleburne last weekend. He was a cousin of David and Lee Kokerrot of Alpine and helped operate the W. H. Kokerrot ranch during 1944 to 1951. His wife Elizabeth Wells a former Sul Ross student. They moved to Cleburne. Burial was at Gonzales last Sunday.

Fort Davis switches to dial system in November
Fort Davis will move from name dialing to number dialing on Thursday November 12 as Southwestern Bell converts to the dial system. New directories place numbers starting with Harrison and 6 in the 3 thousand range. Early telephones began with party lines and cranking walls boxes, with a switchboard once operated at Union Trading Co. and later centralized at Hudnel Jones’ drugstore, marking a shift from old long-distance connections to a modern dial network.
