Democrats Sweep Texas Gubernatorial Victory and Legislature
Democrats clinched major statewide wins in Texas with Preston Smith securing the governorship at about 57 percent over Paul Eggers. Ben Barnes will be the youngest lieutenant governor, defeating Doug DeCluitt as Democrats hold the Legislature with 142 Democrats to eight Republicans in the House and 29 Democrats to two GOPs in the Senate. Initiatives and bond actions included loan funds for students and university programs, while amendments defeated covered welfare and tax issues.
