Alpine area reports heavy snow with a two car collision on Highway 90 near Westside Courts. Chief Jack Johnson admits fault as his patrol car skids into the oncoming vehicle. no injuries but about 200 dollars property damage.
Mayor Hugh S. White proclaims Friday November 11 1955 Veterans Day in Alpine Texas urging citizens businesses and veterans organizations to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and to fly the American flag. The proclamation notes federal and state calls for the observance and is dated November 4 1955.
Secretary of Interior Douglas McKay will arrive in Alpine on Sunday November 20 and head to the Basin for the 11 30 a m dedication of Big Bend National Park on Monday November 21. A free barbecue follows at 12 45 p m with dignitaries including Gov. Allan Shivers U S Rep J T Rutherford State Sen Dorsey B Hardeman and others. A TV crew will film the event with live radio broadcasts and press coverage arranged by local officials and national agencies.
The Big Bend Trail Association plans an annual meeting and officer election at 2 p.m. November 21 in the Park Basin. Governor Shivers and Secretary McKay attend dedication of Texas National Park, with invited Mexican governors to discuss continuing U.S. Route 67 to Topolobampo. A Dallas cavalcade will lead a caravan along 67 to the Big Bend National Park for the dedication events. Officers include Si Phillips and directors from Marfa Presidio Ojinaga Alpine Fort Stockton and Fort Stockton.
Mr and Mrs Press Nichols left in San Antonio Me Monday for a visit and other points.
Mrs. J. R. Morton, 96, died at her daughter's Abilene residence after living here for many years. Survived by several children, including son Will Morton of Alpine. Funeral services to be held at the Baptist Church on Saturday.
Sul Ross Lobos travel to Brownwood to meet Howard Payne Yellowjackets in a non-conference game Saturday night seeking a third win outside league play. In a defensive battle, Votto Gaddis intercepted a pass and Tom m y Evans caught a 11 yard TD pass for SFA.
Alpine hosts a 6-AA clash as the Bucks visit Pecos Eagles in a key district game. Alpine sits eighth. Freddy Davis sidelined by injuries. Manuel Espinosa powered a 17 yard TD as Monahans game winded down. Crane and Kermit lead District 6-AA with four wins, one loss.
Army officials searched all night and found wreckage and body parts scattered over a wide area about three miles east of the old Johnson Farm in Big Bend National Park. The crash occurred around 4 p.m. Wednesday and only one person was believed aboard. An Army helicopter and doctor were sent to identify the plane, believed to be from Laughlin Air Force Base Del Rio.
Miss Mabel Bloys 75, daughter of the Bloys Camp Meetings founder, died at home in Fort Davis after a long tenure as a local historian and teacher. The Bloys family arrived from Coleman in 1888. Survivors include sister Mrs Leslie Fawcett of San Antonio and brothers Roy, Herbert of Fort Davis and Arthur of Kent. Funeral arrangements are pending.
City Commissioner Jim Casner seeks two thousand dollars to fund the Riess water well test to 1000 feet. Helpers started solicitations, reporting $1100 raised by midweek from business firms and individuals. Snow halted drilling at 1802 feet, resuming yesterday. costs averaged under five dollars per foot.
Legion Auxiliary will sell poppies in Alpine today to honor veterans. Proceeds support disabled veterans, with the public urged to buy and wear poppies to salute those who served in World War I II and the Korean conflict.
Sun Oil Company well No 1 McElroy drilled to 7903 feet in lime and Adomite while Gulf Oil No 1 Combs reached 1700 feet in lime and shale, indicating ongoing subsurface penetration. The two wells reflect continued exploration progress in the field with depths showing varied lithology.
Snow blankets Big Bend and Davis Mountain area causing tree damage and traffic slowdowns. Six inches fell in Alpine with hundreds of trees broken under weight. many vehicles stranded and underpasses blocked. Rain and snow extended west to Valentine and Marathon, with 8 to 10 inches reported in the Chisos Mountains. Brahman calves froze to death near Alpine, and roofs leaked at local stores as temperatures dropped to 22 and 6 degrees. Precipitation measured at about one inch of water.
J E Gray Jr was the low bidder on a new Alpine fire station. Base bid 11450.19 with 36 working days for completion. Other bids ranged to 13621.14 with 120 days. Commission and architect to meet to discuss awarding the contract. Site planned north and behind the present station at N 8th St and W Ave E.
Special displays will be on view at Alpine Public Library next week during National Children's Book Week. Mrs. W J Newell librarian invites the public to visit the library to see the large number of books for young readers. Mr and Mrs Frank Newsom left Thursday for Lubbock to visit their son and daughter in law and meet their new granddaughter born last week.
The Rt. Rev. Charles J. Kinsolving, Episcopal Bishop coadjutor of New Mexico and Southwest Texas, will lay the cornerstone at New St. James Church at 11 a.m. Sunday November 13. A 7:30 a.m. corporate communion precedes the service. Afterward parishioners will dine with Bishop Kinsolving and the Davises at the Holland Hotel. He will meet the Canterbury Club of Sul Ross College at 6 p.m. then preach at St. Paul’s in Marfa at 7:30 p.m. and address the Marfa church meeting Monday at 7:30 p.m.
About 200 square yards of 100 percent wool carpeting in rose weave color has been placed at Cross and Cross. The Smith Furniture Co. of Alpine supplied the carpet, which is installed in the display room at the front and in the rear office of the building.
