The American Legion Auxiliary announces 1961 Poppy Day on November 11 in Alpine with poppies made by disabled veterans. Volunteers will sell on street corners to raise funds for veterans or their families, honoring war dead and disabled veterans from World War I II and Korea.
Mrs. Lilla Kay, lunch room supervisor for the Texas Education Agency in Austin, visited the Alpine Central and Centennial lunchrooms Monday. She praised cafeteria personnel and urged improvements in cafeterias and meal preparation.
Municipal Judge Mac Ament of Alpine attended the National Association of Municipal Judges meeting in Houston on November 15. She was named to the committee on public relations, the only woman judge to receive a committee assignment.
Mr and Mrs Bernal Slight spent last weekend visiting their daughter Charlotte Spruill in El Paso where she lives with her husband Mr Arthur Spruill.
Funeral services for Creed Taylor 83 last Texas Ranger survivor of Company E Frontier Battalion were held at First Methodist Church with burial at Elm Grove Cemetery. He died Sunday in Brewster County Memorial Hospital after a long career spanning US Customs Service sheriff duties and border patrols.
Alpine High School travels to Marfa for a 2 30 p m kickoff as the Bucks seek a season finale win after a 20 to 6 defeat at home last Oct 6. The Marfa game follows the Veterans Day parade with bands marching in Alpine prior to the kickoff.
Lee Cowell resigns as Alpine city secretary to take the city controller job in Sweet Water on Dec 1. The resignation was accepted by the City Council, which named T A Beard Bill Winter and C D McCollister to propose a successor, while Paul Bulsterbaum sought permission to install a loudspeaker at his grocery across from Central School to play soft music.
The Alpine chamber urges state funding for a national tourism advertising campaign. Leaders including Peter Koch and Thad Corkins cite Big Bend and Camino del Rio as key assets, noting 1,000,000 visitor losses last year and potential multi-million revenue gains from out of state travelers.
Norman Cash attends Sul Ross State College events for a Norman Cash Day celebration in Alpine. A halftime Hall of Fame plaque presentation by Al O. Duer will honor his 1961 batting title and Tigers career. Festivities include a student assembly a barbecue and a Sul Ross Lobos versus Texas A&I Javelinas football game.
Gene Hendryx told The Avalanche that an Austin news release listing him among signers for a Cox governor petition was false. He said he never met Coke Stevenson or Mrs. Dan Moody, did not attend the Austin meeting, did not sign any petition, and has not supported a Republican candidate.
