The sth annual Highland Hereford Sale will be held Friday Nov 9 at 1 pm at the Highland Sale pavilion Marfa Fairgrounds. Consignments include 40 registered bulls and 140 fancy replacement heifers with buyers from Catto-Gage Ranches Gay Howard and Sons Joe T Lane Lightning Ranch D K Smith Jim Bob Steen Sul Ross State College and others. Annual Girl Scout Fund Drive Opens November 10

An all out polio immunization drive begins Sunday Nov 11 with Sabin oral vaccine offered free in Alpine at the Community Center from 9 am to 7 pm. Type I given now, Type II and III six and twelve weeks later. Districtwide support from the National Polio Foundation and local leaders, with stations in Marathon and Big Bend National Park. A 25 cent voluntary contribution funds the foundation.

Gene Hendryx of Alpine, newly elected state representative from the 72nd District, defeats E. L. Kent of Monahans about 2 to 1. He will meet Gov elect John Connally and Texas legislators in Mission next Saturday at the new fly plant aiding screwworm control. Hendryx carried Brewster County 1094 to 238 and Pecos County 2043 to 929.

Joe Wright an Alpine High School senior was elected president of the Brewster Jeff Davis 4 H Club at a county courthouse meeting. Barbara Grubb and Janet Grubb both of Fort Davis were named vice president and secretary with Jimmy Justice of Alpine as treasurer and Bill Stowell of Alpine as reporter. The club planned its annual awards banquet as County Agent B G Hall discussed lamb feeding for the clubs 50 members.

October Rain Totals in Alpine Report
The Avalanche records show Alpine received 0.67 inches of moisture in October, increasing the year’s total to 11.48 inches. Measurable precipitation occurred on four days: 0.04 on the 4th, 0.10 on the 8th, 0.50 on the 12th, and 0.03 on the 27th. The ten month total last year was 18.37 inches, an above average mark.
