Commencement exercises at Alpine college marked the close of the school year with thirty six high school graduates and several more to receive diplomas at summer school. Rev W H Coleman gave the address and Julia Gentry was valedictorian while Richard Lewis delivered the salutatory. Baccalaureate services were held Sunday with Rev Buren Sparks preaching. Senior Night featured the Pageant of the high school, directed by Ford Rackley. A correction noted the omission of three graduates from last week’s list. Separate plans announced to erect two county courthouse memorials for World War veterans and Brewster County pioneers, with large marble stones sourced from Mabble Mountain, to be placed at courthouse corners. The memorial project is part of a broader beautification program tied to the Texas Centennial. Henry Ward of London was granted a divorce from a co-responsible party, citing the case details.

A Memorial Day ceremony was held yesterday at 10 on the courthouse lawn under the local post and Auxiliary. W.E. Earp gave the address with High School band music and three readings by local women. Alpine pastors assisted and wreaths were laid on a memorial stone by Mary Miles Mitchell and Lorena Crawford as nearby businesses closed for an hour.
RW Arnold of Marathon leased a 33,000 acre portion of the Downie ranch in Terrell County. The tract had been under lease to the Smith Woodward Cattle Company for years, from which Arnold acquired the stock in the deal.
Austin May 25 county relief administrators began a re examination of the Texas relief lists to determine the validity of cases on the rolls. The inquiry does not mean reduced caseload to an arbitrary figure, officials said, as they audit several hundred residents on relief.

A Poppy Day project by Alpine Texas Legion Auxiliary raised 40 dollars net after selling 425 poppies and paying 1250 to veterans who made them. Sul Ross College begins its sixteenth annual summer session on June 4 with the addition of seventeen instructors to handle higher enrollment. The twelve week term offers standard A-1 teachers college courses, high school athletics, practice teaching, and new astronomy lectures from McDonald Observatory staff with field trips. An art colony directed by Julius Weeks and Xavier Gonzales runs the first six weeks and last session respectively, plus a recreational program including horseback riding golf bowling tennis volleyball and swimming.

American Legion awards cover best paper on flag courtesy across classes and the five point award goes to Rose Wil Cole.
North town works will drag all unpaved streets in the coming days after moisture loosens ground. The county loaned a trader for the project. Relief labor will assist where machines cannot run. The main drainage ditch north of Central ward school will be deepened and widened, with streets draining into it reshaped to improve water flow. City improvements include crossings into North Fifth street, widened culvert shoulders, and caliche topping.
City commission named J. A. Stovell Shirley Seales and Pink Phelps to serve on the board of equalization. The board is now in session reviewing tax renditions this week.
