Granada Theatre Money Night Draw Requires Presence

The Granada theatre Money Night prize of fifty dollars was awardable next Tuesday at eighty dollars if the winner did not claim the current week’s prize. Virgil Gregg of Sal Ross was drawn this week but not present to claim. Mia Ray Stuart of Alpine won three dollars at the Little Money Might event last Friday.

Road Work to Start on Alpine Fort Davis Projects

Alpine underpass and Fort Davis Alpine highway paving contracts awarded. W. W. Vann Construction Company of Kerrville to build Alpine section at about $90,000. H. B. Zachary Company of Laredo won Fort Davis Alpine highway bid for $108,200 for about 15.2 miles of bituminous paving starting mid June after a site visit by Zachary.

City Schools To Close This Week

Commencement at Sul Ross auditorium marks end of the school year in Alpine. Twenty one seniors will get diplomas as W. J. Smith presents awards. valedictorian John Holland and salutatorian Frances Morelock lead grads. Dr Haldeen Braddy to give address. music by the high school band and senior quartet. Baccalaureate held last Sunday with Rev David J. Murray preaching. An operetta The Land of Dreams Come True was staged by Central ward pupils at the Junior high auditorium on May 21 drawing a large turnout.

O E S Installation To Be Held Monday

Eastern Star installation services will be held in the lodge rooms here next Monday evening at 8 oclock. Following the installation, a prominent citizen will discuss Girls In My Life. The public is invited to attend the installation and program that follows.

Auto damaged by fire in Clay Olland’s car

An automobile owned by Clay Olland was badly damaged by fire Monday night. A broken spring let the body drop and gas from the tank ignited when driver John Holland struck a match to inspect the car, causing a flare up.

City Plans To Test No 4 Well For Water Supply

The city will test the No 4 well on South Hill to seek higher output before drilling a new well. Mayor Moody says the well currently yields about 300 gallons per minute with no drop in flow. A larger pump may be installed and a test run to confirm increased production. The recently completed 600 foot bore failed to provide enough flow and will likely be abandoned.

Install New Engine At Hovey Dome Test

Drilling has slowed at the Dodson Means Hovey Dome test 18 miles northeast of Alpine this week while new equipment is installed. A diesel engine was added and other gear updated, and a depth of 1965 feet was reported this week.

Chamber of Commerce praised for local gainful tasks

The regular monthly banquet at the Holland hotel highlighted the chamber of commerce as a leading factor in promoting Worthwhile area projects. Speakers J E Casner R A Whiteside and President D C Littleton urged more business men to join and support the chamber. They cited the Big Bend park project highway program and observatory efforts at Davis Threemains Fort Deis Sul Ross college and more. Townsend noted the recent West Texas chamber meeting at Amarillo and the WECC reelection.

Gap on 90 West to be completed

The Texas State Highway Commission plans to finish the Marfa Van Horn section of U S highway 90, the last unpaved stretch between El Paso and the Louisiana border. Contracts are let and work underway on Alpine Marfa and other short segments. road from Brookshire to Alleyton will be paved routing via Katy and Sealy, promising increased traffic once finished next year.

Alpine School Gets New 24 Passenger Bus

Alpine School district board bought a 24 passenger International Bus at a Wednesday night meeting. The bus will shuttle students between schools and transport football and basketball teams to away games. Hord Motor Co of Marfa and Alpine sold the vehicle and donated the old bus to the Alpine Boy Scouts. Delivery of the new bus is due in about a week.

Alpine Junior high awards mark closing exercises

Certificates of promotion were presented to 40 pupils at Alpine Junior High School closing exercises in the junior high auditorium. Alan R. Fraser gave the address with a program including processional, invocation by Rev. David J Murray, class prophecies, class will, awards and diplomas, song Auld Lang Syne, benediction by Rev. Murray, and recession. Those promoted to high school listed, including Douglas Bennett and many others. County officials attended the initial Fort Stockton meeting of the U S Highway 67 Association.

New Pastor Poage Arrives for Alpine First Methodist

Franklin R Poage will arrive in Alpine the first week in June to assume pastorship of the First Methodist Church succeeding Rev R F Davis. Poage comes from Olive Street Church St Joseph MO where he led for three years and has served multiple Colorado and Missouri churches including Huntsville Park Hanibal St Paul Denver and Nelson Memorial Joanville. He is a Chillicothe Normal College and St Louis Law School graduate admitted to the bar in 1908 and has authored essays and poems for church and secular press. Mrs Poage works in the church missionary department. The Poage family includes Rev and Mrs Poage and two children with Mrs R S Smith of Greeley CO and son Allen at Missouri law school. Rev Davis and Mrs Davis plan to move to Sonora on June 4.

Sul Ross Closes Successful Term at College

Sul Ross College concluded its term with seniors receiving diplomas during a large auditorium ceremony. Dr LH Hubbard spoke, Miss Irma Lee Batey led the orchestra, Mrs Ruel Warnock directed the chorus, and 35 seniors earned divites. President H W Morelock announced increased attendance and plans for a larger graduation.

Memorial Day Program Set at Baptist Church in Alpine

Frank C. Ray and Alan Fraser will speak at the Memorial Day program at the Baptist church tomorrow at 10 AM. A parade led by the Alpine High School band will precede services, with Boy Scouts marching past Sixth Street to College Avenue. The program includes Colors Advance, Star Spangled Banner, prayers, Scripture, citizenship eulogy, and Taps, followed by a church decoration of the altar.

Auxiliary Nets 48 From Poppy Day Sale

Approximately $48 was netted in the poppy sale last Poppy Day. Legion Auxiliary members reported $25 spent on poppies and about 700 of 1000 ought were sold. Mary Lou Herron of Alpine won $1 for selling $920 worth of poppies. La Verne Davis, Alpine, won second prize with $890 in sales. Proceeds fund veteran relief.

Rangeland in Best Condition Across Alpine Davis Range

Rangeland from the Big Bend to the Davis Mountains shows unusually lush grass after a week of widespread rains. Ranchers report heavy showers near Alpine with some flood damage and livestock losses in places, while Fort Davis records persistently heavy downpours and officials note May rain can sustain summer moisture.
