Alpine and the Big Bend Davis Mountains region may receive electricity from atomic energy. The Texas Atomic Energy Research Foundation signs a four year contract with General Atomic Division to study controlled thermonuclear reactions. West Texas Utilities and ten other Texas utilities back private funding and seek collaboration with the Atomic Energy Commission. The program aims to understand heavy hydrogen reactions at high temperatures and progress toward a fusion system that generates more energy than it consumes. Utilities expect to switch from natural gas when fusion becomes cost competitive.
Alpine residents and visitors are noted for community activities. The Alpine Publishing Co orders a Model 15 Lino type machine for 2250 dollars boosting local printing. Jimmie Yates plants 12 acres of crops while Charley Wade suffers a finger injury. A merchant assigns stock in bankruptcy. Bandits raid a ranch near Buttril Sublett stealing 15 head. Various locals visit Alpine, attend graduations, or travel to New York and other points.
