Plan to relocate State Highway 99 to remove railroad crossings
Fort Stockton to Tom Green line and possibly to Alpine will yield a grade crossing free road paralleling the Orient for much of its length. Surveying to finish in six months shows Fort Stockton to Girvin about two miles shorter by the new route though marshy stretches require concrete causeways. Minor straightening near Barnhart and Martzon moves the road north of the tracks, avoiding two crossings and placing a Pecos river crossing near Girvin beside the Orient bridge. State aid is secured. Upton County voted half a million dollars in bonds for the project.
