Governor Pat M. Neff attended Alpine Independant School District's commencement for fourteen graduates. He praised valedictorian Nancy Watson and salutatorian Artie Mae Sandifer, urged service and manhood, and lauded Texas history, resources, and future manufacturing potential. A luncheon followed at Holland Hotel with remarks from local officials and community leaders.

Goats Hides and a Big Booze Haul Captured in Alpine
United States Customs Inspectors arrested two Mexican men about 12 miles south of Alpine on a Wednesday night transporting roughly 35 to 40 gallons of liquor stored in four goat hides turned inside out. The suspects Chales Domin guiez and Nesto Arriola were jailed in Brewster County, and the hides were seized for inspection. The case prompted questions about federal versus state jurisdiction and possible prosecutions.

Boy Scouts Plan Brewster County First Trip
The Alpine Boy Scouts plan a early June tour into Brewster County to see the Grand Canyon of the Rio Grande and other natural wonders. They will study petrified tree trunks, fossil beds, quicksilver mines, wax factory, and may visit beaver colonies. Scoutmaster Tom Gibbs will lead the party with several adults aboard.
